Spring Days By GEORGE MOORE. Lan be put upon her action, and estrangement
don T. Werner Laurie.
This is the reprint of a book published twenty-five years ago. In the opinion of George Moore's admirers, it is one of the best novels he ever wrote. It is certainly a well-conceived study in the development of family life. The family is not a like- able one, but it is probably representative of many middle-class families in England. There are two flirtatious daughters and a somewhat morbid son, who cherishes as early passion for a dead actress and lives a squalid life with a woman he has married in secret Into this family circle cones & young Irishman, the heir to a title, who also has passionate love affairs while trying to persuade himself that he is in love with one of the flirtatious daughters of the house of Brookes. He is a painter and a musician as well as an amorous Irishman, fickle and yet loveable. It in his drift into the sea of matrimony that we watch with most interest.
and reparation ensur. However, the birth of a child makes a difference, and the curtain rings down on a reconciled cuple.
Glorious Lie. By Dorothea Gerrard,
London: John Long & Co. This is one of those fascinating novels which "grips" from the opening. It is 4 splendid story, related with fine effect, of a woman's self-sacrifice. An outline of the story would be unsatisfactory, and the reader is advised to lose. no time in getting a copy of the book,
Faol to Fame. By J. E. HAROLD TEELY.
London: John Long & Co. This is an excellent sample of the historical novel. It concerns the life of adventure led by Jack Nevison, a noted! highwayman who rendered service to the, Merry Monarch, and many of whose feats are ascribed to the less picturesque per-, sunality of Dick Turpin. For instance, the famous ride to York in one day The Consort. By Mrs. EVERARD COTESusually credited to Turpin was perform- (Sara Jeannette Duncan), Londoned by Nevison, who, having committed a Stanley Paul & Co.
robbery in the vicinity of London, roda through the night to York in order to prove an alibi. The story of Jack Nevison's lito is admirably told, and the reader follows him through his many adventures with sympathy and interest, The appendices add much to the value of the book.
It is somewhat difficult to blend polítics! and love, and though Mrs. Cotes displays much skill in developing her story and dolineating her characters, there is always lacking the undefinable something that gives an air of reality to a story and makes it grip. Her hero has feet of elag and is not, taking him all in all, the sort of stuff that heroes are usually made of, yet we like him better than the cold immaculate creature to whom he is wed. Mary Lossol, who inherits the Lossel millions and the responsibilities of administering the affairs of the banking house of that name, is too absorbed in mundane matters to foster the tiny god of love, who brings sweetness into most lives. Consequently, the and her hus band drift apart, and his espousal of Socialistic polities and candidature for High Pollard completes the severance. There are some minor characters of whom more might have been made, and a fow deft touches where current political tendencies are handled; but, on the whole, The Consort does not reach a high level as a story.
Exotic Martha. By DOROTHEA GERARD.
London: Stanley Paul & Co.
A Scottish girl, named Martha Grant, suffering from lung trouble, goes to an Alpine health, resort where she meets a Java-born Dutchman and falls in love with him: Against the wishes of her parents, she becomes afanced to him, prior to his return to Java, and arrange- ments are made for her to join him there. He writes giving Martha her troedom, but the letter does not reach her, and she i sails for Java only to find him married. to his master's daughter, and as she does not care in return to Scotland to en counter the sneers of her village friends alio takes engagement with an old eccentric. The sudden death of her employer from poison, the fact that she is passing under a false name and is left the major portion of the old lady's fortune, and other circumstances lead to Martha's arrest on a charge of murder but eventually she is acquitted, is found out by her old Scottish sweetheart and returns to Ballenweem as Mrs. George Fettos. The authoress has evidently been in Java, and is thus able to give her story plenty of local colour. It is a simply told story, but the interest is kept up from start to finish.
The Spinster By HUBERT WALES. Lon-
don John Long & Co.
Hubert Wales has acquired a reputa tion for the skilful manner in which he treats certain delicate themes. In the present instance he deals with the feelings of a healthy woman who against her inclination finds herself "shelvad." She does not take kindly to the prospect of spinsterhood, and as the result of her associations with a male friend her whole life is changed. How sb has to stone for a moment of weaknes is graphically told, and, as is usual with Hubert Wales' characterisations, the reader is forced to extend his or her sympathy to the heroine.
A Transplanted American, By ELSIE LATHROP. London: John Long & Co. In this pleasantly told tale the central theme is the radical differences in the status of women in America and Italy. The heroine, an American girl, with all яв American girl's independence, marries ап "Italian," and
lives with him in his native land. The inevitable happens. Her freedom of movement shocks the community, which is not accustomed to seeing women roani- ing the countryside without a female companion or her husband, and is not accustomed to frank open relations to tween a woman and malo friends and acquaintances. Hemary's Corner. "By Ton GALLON. Len-
don: John Long & Co.
Tom Gallon is a name to conjure with. especially after his great success in "The Groat Gay Road." Memory's Corner " is a different type of story to the former, but it betrays the master hand, the skill- ed story teller His characters ara with his wonderful voice, the blustering instinet with life, the little master
musical coach, the two little ladies who lived in quiet spinsterhood all move through the pages with a realism that is most vivid. The story itself is a pretty one, bringing out the whole gamut of the emotions, and is one which will be en- ivyed by most readers:
Clouds. By RICHARD TOLESDEN. London:
John Long & Co. P
This writer knows his Kent, and writes lovingly of its rural beauties and his- torical associations while telling a charm- ing story. Briefy, it deals with the snobbery of British life which refuses to associate with tradespeople and others. It relates how the hero, though born a tradesman's son, was ignored outside tho university but had to be recog¤ised with- himself and proved himself superior to in its precincts. He made a name for
the class distinctions which sought to keep him in place. On the whole Clouds must be described as a good healthy novel.
