Curtain Horvices which would be consider- ed menial by many people. He adds that it makes no differenes in his relations with the other toys. Apparently in the other Anglo-Saxon nations enobbishness is not curried to the extreme that prevails in the "old country." One boy who left us nearly two years ago wrote mo last Christmas,This school is known to be one of the best in Devoo, but for all that I must say I like my old school much better. We had a great deal more freedom in Weihaiwes, ruore privileges and much more individual attention-especially in the making of character, also in work. I know what a school in Eng- land with all its discipline is like." We must make some allowance for the dia- tance that londs enchantment to the view, especially in the case of a boy whose first term, if I am correctly informed, was spoilt by measles and the second by scarlet faver Yet there is some cause for grati- fication that, in the opinion of an old boy, we compare not unfavourably with Achool known to be one of the best in 'Devon." This College of Precaptors examines some thousands of candidates in England every year. The College is also the off cial examining body in the educational system of the Government of Nesfound- land. It examines in addition some hun- dreds of candidates in other colonies. At the half-yearly examination of last sum- mer there were 239 colonial candidates. Six "distinction,” c., special excellence in particular sub- jeets, were won by these three candidates, of which five fell to us. We occasionally meet people who declare that no good thing, educationally, can come out of the East. These results would seem a Batig- factory reply to such critics. Thore is a general reaction at home against the The Col "tyranny of examinations.” lege of Preceptors was incorporated by royal charter some sixty years ago partly for the purpose of conducting examine- tions of pupils in secondary schools. Ox- ford and Cambridge then followed suit and, quite recently, London University; and the whole field of secondary educa tion is over-ridden by examinations. An authoritative commission has been ap: pointed to inquire into the subject, and recently issued its report. It recommend, that pupils prepare for two examinations only, one at the age of about fourteen, and the other for a “leaving school cor- tificate.'

e." It remains to be seen whether

the general public and parents, who clam- our for "resulta," will allow the schools of England to carry out this recom mendation.

EDUCATIONAL DIFFICULTIES. After a reference to the out-door life of the buys, the Headmaster dealt with educational difficulties One of the most serious being defective early education. He again urged parents not to postpone sending their sons to school at the usual age, not to impose this quite unnecessary handicap on them. Another obstacle to a boy's progress is a too frequent change of school.

"SELECT" SCHOOLS.

As in England, there are people in this part of the world who would like to have their sons educated in so-called "select" schools. A school in the East that at- tempted to make social distinctions would, I am convinced, be a financial fail- The "selectness" of aschool at home

of my profession, who have worked in different types of school, know that the tone of a school has little or nothing to do with the price charged for the educa tion supplied. You can no more sicure a high-toned school for your son by cash payments, than you can purchase a good character for yourself.. This mast bo obvious to all who are not blinded by social prejudice. The high fees charged. by some of our largest and old-established schools did not prevent a well-known pub- licist, the late W. T. Stead, from describ

T nurseries of vice ing them as the Moreover, the tone of a school may differ widely at different periods of its existence. There was an amazing chango wrought in the moral atmosphere of Rugby during the period that ·Dr. Arnold, perhaps the greatest of modern schoolmasters, ruled there. Even Arnold a man of tremendous force of charac ter

and

personality-could not effect re form without wholesale expulsions, quote from one of his addresses in the school chapel: It is not necessary that this should be school of three hundred, or one hundred, or of fifty boys; but it is necessary that it should be a school of Christian gentlemen.' I don't suppose that, in these démocratic days, anyone will claim that gentility, egy more than Christianity, is the peculiar possession of any particular sub-section of modera society. Here, then, we cannot recognize social distinctions, and I am bound to BAY

that some of our best and most

pro- mising pupils have come from humble homes the children of people who are not rich, The school also reflects the cosmopolitan nature of the white popula- tion in the East; and we have had here at one time or another representatives of alnost every European nationality. This, too, 1 regard as boneficial-a cor- rective to some of our insular defects and prejudices.

After a speech by the Chairman in which he emphasised many of the points in the Headmaster's addross, Sir James STEWART LOOKHAET proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. Burnett for presiding at the prize distribution.
