PALACE OF THE BEAUTIFUL.

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, TUESDAY, AUGUST 20TH, 1012.

SIR L. ALMA-TADEMA'S ROME FOR SALE..

The Pall Mall Gazette of the 20th July says:-

Tho most beautiful house in London is for sale. Everything about it is stamped- with the personality of its late owner, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema,

And what a wonderful and variod, per- sonality it is soon to have been as it reveals itself to-day to the visitor to the home that he built with such lavish and artistic caro in Grove End-road, St. John's Wood.

His love of woods is seen in every door, his love of antique things in every room, his love of polished brasses in every stair, and his love of paintings and of books on every wall:

It is a house, too, of charming vistas and of infinite variety. At one moment you are taken back through the ages to old Rome; at the next, by crossing o passage or turning the handle of a polished and decorated door, you are in Beventeenth-century Holland, amongst antique windows and shutters, old oak carved ceilings, and eld Dutch furniture, cabinets, and glass.

CHARMING VISTAS.

The vistas from the studio, from the halls, and from the rooms are a revelation of the wonderful effects that may be pro- duced by artistic planning and arrange- mont.

You are rarely in one room but you have a pretty vista of another beyond it. Or, if it is not a room, it is the garden; and the garden, with its marble fountain and its lake, full of tama carp, ita avenues of ilexes, its arcade and its pergolas, its velvet lawns and its wealth of flowers and curtains of creepers, is as unique and as fascinating in its way, as the house itself.

Artists were so charmed with the house and had so deep an admiration and so warm an affection for its owner that they felt it a delight to decorate the panels of the Roman hall with their own paintings. Lord Leighton's original design for the Bath of Payche is antong them, with an intercating Poynter and Sargent and original work from numerous other re presentative modera painters.

THE MOTTOES ON THE WALLS. When Mr. Carnegie visited the house Home years ago he suggested for this hall the polto that Sir Lawrence afterwards inscribed on its walls. "I count myself in nothing else so happy as in a soul remembering my good friends”- -

Sir Lawrence, indeed, loved mottoes, as well as all other beautiful things that he gathered about him. Sleep soundly; " was the inscription that his wake well," guests and family found before them on retiring at night; and in the morning the first thing that greeted them as they came down the stairs was the further in- scription on the

Ifal morning to wall. "A fair and cheer-

In the atrium, with its Pompeian ceil- ing, its onyx window, and its cool foun- with walls of alabaster, is the great tam, desk, ten feet long, with its rich woods and panel casts of old ivories at which Sir Lawrence used to write standing.

From the gallery above, you look down upon the studio, & noble room of the BX flaest

with

of dome proportions aluminium and walls of rich marble, out as the old Remans cut it, lengthwise, for Old Tunisian embroideries, gupport. Roman seats, Chinese chair, Egyptian stools, have their place hero; and though different periods and the workmanship of different races mark the furniture, the whole effect is one of porfect harmony.

A PRICELESS PLANO,

Here is Sir Lawrence's painting "The Death of the Firal-born" that he has left to the Museum at Amsterdam, and here the grand piano, made of various woods, exquisitely inlaid with ivory, tortoise- shell, and mother-of-pearl, on the parch- inent panels of which great musicians, composers, and singers, Melba and Paderewski, Saint-Saëns and Joachim amongst them, have inscribed their names with the date on which they either played on it or sang to its sweet music.

There are many other wonderful things -rooms with Japanese paper and prints; galleries of paintings and engravings; a garden studio with a loggia; a billiard room with a perfect table and fine old tapestry curtains, many quaint corners and cup-hoards; bedrooms with delight- ful balconies; and an oak-panelled din- ing room, with Japanese gold paper and antique glass, looking out upon the ever- green oaks in the garden.

Treasures abound on all sides. Ob- viously it is a house that must be bought as it stands. To alter or to remove its beauties would be to spoil them.

NATION AS PURCHASER.

-

It is suggested in some quarters that the purchaser should be the nation. Such an end would be worthy of the hand by which it was no wonderfully designed.
