SEMI-DIESEL ENGINES.

THEIR CONSTRUCTION AND ADVANTAGES.

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, THURSDAY, AUGUST sta, 1912.

(BY A CORRESPONDENT OF THE TINES.")

So much attention has been paid of late to the Diesel oil engine that the claims of the so-called semi-Diesel type have been somewhat overlooked. It is comparatively

Continental firms have been the pioneers in this case as in so many others, and one Swedish firm who build somi Diesel engines on a very largo scale are said to be rafusing orders owing to the Impossibility of turning them out quickly enough.

PRINCIPLE OF WORKING.

The term semi-Diesel is in the reality a misnomer, for the engines work on a vory different principle from that of the Diesel engine, though the two are alike in the fact that they are capable of using. heavy crude oil as fuel. The difference between them may be briefly described as follow:-In the cylinders of Diesel enging the air is first compressed to a very high pressure (from 40 to 50 atmospheres) and, near the termination of the compression stroke, oil is injected by means of a charge of compressed air supplied by an auxiliary air pump. The mixture is then ignited by the high tem- perature created by the high compression. In the case of the semi-Diesel engine the compression pressure is moderate (gon-

You have had, gentlemen, a de-. votion which no money can buy, his patience in wading through the most appalling mass of documente is in- eredible, the wisdora with which he avoided the nurgerous traps laid for us was at times almost uncanny, and his conduct of one of the most, if not the most, complicated and difficult trials ever held in Shanghai, could not have been excelled by any one.. Mr. Mossop bas assisted Mr. Douglas and myself with great loyalty and ability, and if he has not been so much in the limelight as Mr. Douglas and I, he has nevertheless had a very important part to play in all the proceedings which have taken place, and has played that part, right

Gentlemen, my fee for winding-up this Company, including work still to be done, in Tle. 25,000. You are at liberty to accept or refuse this amount just as you like. If you refuse on a show of hande. I shall ask for a poll. Before asking you to vote I would merely say that if you refuse, the fee will then have to be fixed by the Hongkong Court. There is, as perhaps you are aware, a liquidation scale of fees under the Hong kong Ordinances. To this 1. am entitled without reference to anybody. During the progress of the liquidation I was away from Shanghai on your business for nearly six mnoths, and I am entitled a daily allowance during this absence, If, on taking into considera- tion the extraordinary difficulties of the liquidation, I am allowed absence fees on the highest scale, then my taxed fee will be considerably larger than I am now asking you to pay; if I am merely granted the normal absence fee I shall receive about Tis, 25,000.
