RHEUMATISM,

LUMBAGO & SCIATICA.

Rheumatism, Lumbago mod Sciatica are three of the most common and most painful complaints and practically arise from the same cause and the names only distinguish the location of the disease. If the arms and legs are affected it is called Rheumatism; if in the Loiss, Lumbago; and in the hip, Sciatica. The attacks are generally brought on by chills when the body is overheated, or by exposure to damp or cold draughts, which act, not upon the bones or muscles but upon the Uric Acid in the Blood, which is the cause of the disease. The failure of the Liver and Kidneys to filter and absorb this Acid leads to an accumulation in the system, tends to elog the circulation, and harden the tissues forming the blood vessels. Thurevery movement of the affected parts causes you intense agony. The paios ore affected more or less by cold or heat. A domp day will double you up, or the warmth of the bed will intensify the pain. Rheumatista is generally regarded as one of the most difficult ailments to cure, und invariably medicines are tried simply with the hope of temporary relief. Dr. MORSE'S INDIAN ROOT PILLS have been wonderfully successful A sudden twinge of pain.

not merely affording a cessation of the pain, but by driving the poison out of the blood and restaring the joints to their original suppleness. They get at the cause as no other remedy does. They get at the foundation of the complaint which is the blood and a trial will abundantly prove the wonderful efficacy of this remedy.

They are a perfect Bloud.

THE COLLIGION OF STANS. There is good reason to believe that the bodies in space-both laminous and dead -occasionally full together, and his con- ception of euch an event was given by Prof. A. W. Bickerton in a late Royal Institution lecture. The collisions do not come at random. Gravity and other agencies are at work, and before two suns collide they come into each other's' influence for hundreds of years, being drawn toward each other with constantly increasing speed. As the velocity would be proportionate to size, the collision would take place, in the same time--about three-fourths of an hour-for all bodies. With the collision, the two stars become a now one, the tremendous speed is sud- denly converted into heat, and the ox- plosive force expands the now star at the rate of millions of miles an hour. This, Prof. Bickerton believes, explains the origin of Nova Permai, which suddenly flashed out in 1901 with 10,000 times the brilliancy of our sun. This star became. the brightest in the heavens except Sirius, and was the most brilliant. now star that has appeared in 200 years.

A MEDICAL PROBLEM SOLVED. A now infectious disease of unknown origin was reported in 1899 by Dr. N. E. Brill, observations having been made of 17 cases, and in 1910 one hospital.in New York had 255 cases of Brill's discase, Though it was man to be similar to typhus fever, which had been recognized in 1823, no proof of identity had been found. After an elaborate investigation, Drs. Anderson and Goldberger have now shown that the "new" disease is really typhus fever, which is evidently being brought to. Ameries by immigrants at a quite startling rate.

CORAL GROWTH.

The growth of coral under natural con- ditions has been lately observed on the Keeling atoll during a period of 100 days. The massive forms increased one thirty- deventh of their size, and the branched species gained 1.079 inch, or at the rate of 3.94 inches yearly.

HOW CELLULOID BURNS,

Burning celluloid is one of the most difficult and dangerous kinds of fire to extinguish, An investigation by Dr. Panzer, of Vienna, has shown that, while the substance does not ignite spontaneous ly, decomposition continues after the flames of a piece of burning celluloid are extinguished, and does not cease even when the material is plunged into a vessel of carbonic acid or steam.. Oxygen from the air not being necessary for decomposi tion, water and ordinary chemical ex- tinguishers have little effect on eslluloid fires. Decomposition takes place at tem- peratures between 850deg, and 365dog. F., and may be started by an open flame or even a hot stove. When slowly heated, the celluloid first softens, then blisters, and finally decomposes suddenly, some- times bursting into flame. The products are gases, liquids and carbon. The white furaca from combustion form an explosive. mixture with air, and the colourless gases contain poisonous carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. As those gases, explosivo and irrespirable, are intensely hot, more over, it is almost impossible for firemen to get near a celluloid blaze in a build- ing.

two doses daily of two-fifths of a gramme for each hen, but the feeding was other-

wise normal. The results are described as highly gratifying. The eggs of the treated hens have shown remarkably ini-

proved keeping qualities as compared with eggs from the "control" lot of hens, the improvement being most marked where protropin was used. Unfortunate ly, however, in the trials so far made the texture and constitution of the white of the egg have been affected. The dosed eggs were noticeably changed, and in its present stage the experiment is one of Promising possibilities rather than secom- plished results.

BETTER NAMES FOR ALLOYS.

The need of a more accurate classifica- tion of alloys is being felt by British metallurgists. Taking "brass" and

"bronze" as an illustration at a recent meeting of the Institute of Metale, Dr. A. Rosenhain suggested that a mixture containing chiefly copper and zine should be designated as "brass,” and one having chiefly copper and tin should be known as "bronze." This, would give a clearer idea of the character of various alloys than is usually obtained. When a third motal is present in appreciable quantity, its name would be added, and an alloy of copper and zinc containing little manganese would be called manganese brass."

After being made into clothing, woolen fabrics even of fine quality-bave shown a mysterious change, becoming streaked¦ or swelled up in places. This is attri- buted to atmospheric influence, and Otto Huckenbech in Germany has been trying to prevent the alteration of texture and appearance by an even exposure of the new-made fabric to cold and dampness, After various experiments, in one of which he forced a blast of cooled and dampened air upward through the cloth of steal and great tensile strength is A new copper alloy with the hardness as it was being rolled out, he devised a claimed by & French metallurgist.
