The announcement by the Royal Dutch l'etroleum Company of a reduced divi- dead for the year 1011 does not come s a surprise to those who followed condi- tions in the oil business during that year. Towards the end of 1910 the Standard Oil Company of America made an official aunouncement to the effect that in coner- quence of its large over-supplies of petro- learn in America, it intended to effect a heavy reduction in prices in the consum ing markets of the world. This amounted to an open declaration of war on those who derive their supplies from sources outside America, and accordingly during the year 1911 prices were maintainod throughout the world at a very low level.

The nature of the real motives which lav at the root of this attack by the Standard Oil Company on other pro ducer is of course a matter of conjecture, but whatever they may have been the oper attack tailed and this policy has been completely abandoned, with the rosult that the year 1912 promises to prove one of the most brilliant in the annals of the Royal Dutch Company,
