The canal geologist insists that the phenomena are caused by the axidation of pyrites, but, despite official denials, the rumour about a volcano persiste, and much hindrance has already been caused by the refusal of the men to use dynamite in the drill holes, for fear of a premature explosion. I examined the spot a day or two afterwards, and found steam. and four principal vents, the smallest escaping from-uumerous small openings. being Bin, in diameter and the largest 1ft. The temperature was so high that the hand could not be held at the mouth of the larger openings for more than a second or two. It has been announced that the canal will be formally opened some time next year, and the disappointment throughout the country will be great if for any reason' the opening is postponed.
