HONGKONG UNIVERSITY.
(Continued from page 8.)
DESCRIPTION OF THE BUILDING. Ede, G. Friesland, F. Graham, G. P.
The buildings include the main build- ing, a house for a married Principal, and houses for two married Professora (with out family) or four unmarried Professors. The main building is calculated to afford lecture rooms, etc., for the accommodation. of 500 Under-graduates, and it is planned so as to be capable of extension. The chief feature is the Great Hall Soft by 50ft. with domed roof saft. high. Thore are 11 class rooms and 6 laboratories and workshops, with libraries, a common room for students and committee rooms, offices, coolies' quarters in basement, oto. It is built on perhaps the finest site available for the purpose in the Island in the neigh- bourhood of the Hospitals and Mortuary, whose proximity is a necessity for instruc- tional purposes for medical students. It is located on the side of a hill and in addition to the large area required for the buildings it has been found possible at great cost by cutting and by retaining walls to provide a level playgro 275ft. x 275ft. The site has been given by the Colonial Government together with a large area immediately adjoining for Residential Quarters for Students and a smaller area for the erection of an Anatomical Laboratory. The whole com- prises an area of 709,780 sq. ft. and is situated 200ft. above the sea, overlooking the City of Victoria, with a magnificent sea view over the Harbour. Immediately below it is the site upon which the Church Missionary Society are bailding a Hostel (separated only by a public road from the University grounds), and it is under- stood that on the adjoining site the Roman Catholic Mission will probably build their Hostel, while immediately above it and also conterminous with the University precincts is the area acquired by the London Missionary Society for a similar purpose. The cost of the buildings and preparation of the ground which has been borne by Sir H. Mody-whoso recont death has been an irreparable loss not only to the University but to the Colony is approximately 8176,207. The value of the sites given by the Government is estimated at $176,207. The cost of the Anatomical Theatre is estimated at 28,450. This sum has been separately raised by the Chinese and Mr. Fisher has volunteered his services an architect. Bo far as the buildings are concerned there remain to be provided: (a) Residential quarters for students; (b) Fittings and furniture for the whole of the University buildings, and (c) Equipment and Apparatus for the Laboratories and Workshops.

The Victoria Colonist of the 28th ultimo says:-Sir William Mackenzie, who has just completed a through trip westward over the fast-growing line of the Canadian Northern through system from sea to sea, left Victoria with his party thie morning, having yesterday had several protracted conferences with Premier McBride. He has nothing to amend or to qualify in respect to the full redemption of the Com- pany's promises to the Canadian people with regard to the new trans-continental

We are determined to have it the most modern and the best in every way the fastest thing of the kind that it is possible to get with assurance of safety. It will be about the last word in ferries,
Though the attendance at the opening of the bazaar was not so large as to be conducive to brisk business, the stalls, which were eight in number, were well patronised throughout the day. They Are arranged as follows-European goods, sold by Chinese ladies; Canton ware, sold by Chinese ladies, and Japan ese and Foochow watu, sold by European ladies. The wares displayed in the vari- ous stalls are of first-class quality, and in fact some of the goods were so superior that persons of moderate means could not, despite their ambitions, think of invest ing, so high were the figures marked on the goods. Particularly was this the case- in reference to Chinese wares, especially porcelains. The stails were well laid out, and the supervision was faultless In addition a Chinese restaurant has been fitted up by Mr. Ying Kea, and dinners- will be served from 7.30 till 9 o'clock each evening. The bar, which contains many "sepcialities," is situated in delightful proximity to the bandstand. It is well equipped, and is in the stewardship of £ hundred attendants. Among the numer ous side shows which have been provided for the entertainment of visitors is the pathephone, which has been installed by Messia. Pathe Frores, who have also fitted up a fine cinematograph hall. The scenic railway is also one of the entertainments It has been described so often that a re- petition would be superfluous, but need Tess to say it is a novelty in the Colony, and that fact alone was sufficient to ensure large patronage. There will be no lack of music during the forthcoming week, as
