A DEF AND AN OBJECT LEMOS,
The close guarding of our Army magazines which is now taking place, mys the Portsmonth Correspondens of the Daily Mail, is due to an extraordinary incident in the nature of a highly successful practical joke which was played recently upon a gased at Upaor magazines, Chatham.
The story in detail is related on good authority by the Portsmouth Evening News, which, while Not mentioning Chatham specifically, states that it occurred in a fortifləd arsenal of similar

In the local officers' mess, one evening a dis. cussion arose as to whether or not a clever spy or unauthorised person could penotrato Upaor magazines word, it effect, blow them up. The discussion Waxed so warm that ene ofilcer who maintained that they could be entered offered to take on a wager that he could get inside himself without authority provided he had the assistanca of a small number of men. The sporting offer was accepted, and the officer had no dificulty in getting live men of bis regiment to come with him. --After dark one night he went up to the main gate of Upnor, followed in a casual and non- chalant manner by the quintetta, who played their part very closerly. The oficer found only one man on guard, a soldier. The officer, who Mr. and Mrs. Jorgens

He was thrown into Paul Licoder the guard-room pinso by, and three men kept Mr. & Mr Frank Mose watch ou blm while the officer and two others and oblidrea rambled around the marazines, dodging sentries

It should be explained that in each garrison there is an emergency battalion-a battalion periodically allocated to be ready to turn out for duty at ten minutes' notice, the only equipment carried being arms, ammunition, and omergency rations. There is nothing to connect the recent in incident at Portsmouth with the German spy casa, and the offi isl version now is that the santry was either over zealous or frightened at the notion of local mon attempting to pilfer.
