AN IMPERIAL ADMONITION.-

The Imperial Edict resently issued on the subject of the riots in Szechuan province is thas translated by the Peking Daily News 2-

September 12. Since the nationalisation of the trunk rail. ways We have clearly annannoed that the Board concerned had bean commanded to make satis- factory arrangements for dealing with the former sharos subscribed by merchanta and the general public, The Throno has imbed com. bined benevolence with righteousness-in-show- ing sympathy to the people by lightening their bardon and safeguarding them from losing

money.

The people of Szechuan, however, are not aware of this intention and have usel some pretext to form societies and deliver speeches. At first only the ignorant simpletone supported the movement, but later | eople stopped businear and students ceased to attend schools, displaying some sort of insubordination.

We have on many occasions telographically instructed Chao Erb-feng to suppress and dia-

FROM AMERICA FOR A WEEK'S

SHOOTING...

SPECIAL TRAINS POR A MILLIONAIRE'S PARTY.

A London paper last month annonnial that Mr. Harry Payne Whitney, the American millionaire and vicehorse owner, had come from New York with a party of friends for a week's grouse shooting over the Holwick Hall moors, Upper Teesdale, which he has leasol from the Earl of Strathmore.

The trip cost Mr. Whitney thousands of pounds. The party, which included Mrs. Whitney and her two children, Mr. E. H. Harriman, cousin of the late Mr. E. H. Har. riman, the railwag magnate, and Mr. Payon Thorapaon, occupied specially fitted private suites during the voyage from Now York. The charge for these was £140 each.

The sitting rooms were decorated daily with choice flowers, for which Mrs Whitney paid £60 before leaving New York.

During the early part of the voyage the millionaire's party kept to their own rooms, but subsequently they dined in the saloon with the other passengers,

Mrs. Whitney, who is a daughter of the late Mr. Cornelius Vanderbilt, and is stated to have £2,000,000 in her own right, wore a number of mag- nificent gowns during the voyage, and on one acasion-a-diamond wecklace worth $10,000-1 wedding gift from her husband,
