SCIENTIFIC MISCELLANY,

A CLIMBING MAST.

The telescopic mast just brought out in Eng. land is an ingenious device that is claimed to | have solved the problem of a purtable extension pols for wireless telegraphy and other purposas, |"It consists of a series of weldest sloel tuben, pf muccessively diminishing size and ibickness' whichi are arranged to slide within one another, The extension is effected by a novel method. An uutempered perforated steel band is stepped Ho as to closely the diameter of ensh round section in turn-or the diagonal if the aactions are square-and when this band-section ́is unwound from a drum by a winch handle, it rises in the tubos amil carries the smallest tabo with it. As this is fully extended a collar engages with the top collar of the next sectiori mauring that to rise in tura. Automatic clamps securely faster wack joint and can be released when desired by a lovice at the bass. A leng mast can be raised or taken down bi a minute or two. Light minsta of 40 to 240 feet areĮdė. signed for wireless telegraphy, but heariar ones up to 65 feet or so. to be used for such purposes as building construction, are made strong enough to support 5 to 10 tons.

"THE LEPÍRDING "TELEPHONE,

The jelen of a phonographic cuestvor for the telepbona is not particularly now, bal aa” altempt to put it to use has loan at last sub- mitted to the Paris Academy of Sciences by three French physicists,, Âu air chamber af 697.1 | adjustable size is plated between the diaphragm of the telephone receiver and that of the phonographic microphone. The design is to adapt this receivor for taking down messages that come in the absence of the owner of the

the METRIC CHERENT AS ROLLER

PROTECTOR.

A curious method of preventing the corro- sion anil pitting of molaix from the olentro. chemical action of water, as in boilers, has bea inndar test in Australia. The galvanic action of the corrosion substances in the water is neutralized by passing weak dynamo currents | through thò metal to be protected, and in the Cexperiments so far made this plan seems to ens | sare greatly diminished trouble with boilers, At the Melbourse Baiversity the process hus been rid 封门 metals imorsed singly. and in connected pairs in hot and- coki sea water and various ditate acids. All karmful action was at once stopped, and unly a anali expenditure of electrical power was neieg- sary to ensure complete preservation. The practical wloption of this simple remedy is ex- pected to result in a very important saving-not only in boiler repairs, but alsó in zinc and other materials now used as corrosion preventives.

COVERED COÁL.

Late Westphalian experiments seem to in- dicate that little is gained in aitampla to preserve coal by excluding air under water or in special atmospheres. The tests were wade with lumps about 3:4 of an inch in dia- meter, a portion being placed in balf-gallon jare under water, carbon dioxide, flue gases or sulphurous unið vapours, and quother portion being exposed in the open air. Though diferent coals gare unequal realte, the lose of gas was not much influenced in any case by the protec tive treatment. It was recommended that if anything is to be done, the coal piles should? bo provided with roofs, and thermometers) should be inserted so as to obtain warning. of any tendency to spontaneous combustion.

ÁN IMPROVED ONY BATTERY.

For a new alectric dry battery of English origin a useful life of 34 years is claimed, with practically no deterioration when it is not in ge. It may be re-charged several times. A number of aine plates form the negative siement, and for the positive a cacbon rod is embedded in a composition of

the dust from overy crevion, with a belt-mouthed charcoal and manganese oxide, surrounded suction tube behind the air nozzle, and a separa.hy a mixture of chlorides of ammonium, liwe tor or filter that retains the dust sucked in and and zinc. It is ovan thanght. that geocoronium may be identical with

the gas of the solar corona. The new ele ment must be lighter than bydrogen,, with inertia so slight as not to retard meteorites up preciably or heat them to incandescence, ned It is assumed to be Mendelejeff's predicted monatomic gas of atomic weight about 04, Hydrogen having been found by John and others to constitute the chief part of the atmosphere at a height of 40 miles, it is farther assumed that at and altitude of 10 miles the atmosphere consists of hydrogen and geocoronium in something like equal proportions. If these assumptions are truo, it is calculated that the new gas should form 1 part in 20,000,000 or less of air at sea level, sud its isolation should be quite possible.
