This, the latest of the kind, is edited as regards its literary contents by Stanley Portal Hyatt, and as regards its art portion by Alfred Prage. It is a quarto volume of overa hundred page, and the names of some of its contri- bators will be quite sufficient to indicate that it is the best of its kind yet produced. Rudyard Kipling, Hall Caine, Conan Doyle, and about thirty others, not one of them without an already established
reputation of the highest, All its pores, while H.B.M. Princess. Louise, Sir Charles Holroyd, Seymour Lucas, Frank Brangwyn and many others of the highest repute illustrate them. Memulay, whose pen portrait of the gay monarch is one of the most brilliant in our Ilterature, is constrained to say of him that he was no drunkard, but after reading Miss Senior's biography we are indined to doubt whether we would not prefer to believe that the monarch's indulgence in other vises was not infrequently due to looking upon the wino when it was too rosy. Eugland's glory was more thoroughly eclipsed since the time of Elizabeth as when the socond Charles occupied the throne, and we may bo certain that had the daily new- paper existed in his days and easier communi- cation between the provinces and the ompit l, the common peoplo, living nader conditions as Hamentable as those prevailing in France on the ere of the great revolution, would · hars narobed

Without any tench of prudery, we hope, wo who live within the Empire of to-day hare reason to express thankfulness that during the past century the Court has boan clososed of ita coarseness, and the life of the prople, even if below the surface there is much to regret, much to condemn, is cleaner than it was in the time of Charles. The country owes much to Quee Victoris, and there is nothing more certain than this, that the loyalty to the throne so conspica- ously displayed during the past few months is largely due to the obaracter of the King and his Royal Consort and the belief thattheir domestic virtues mirror the life of their people and of their timos. Miss Senior's pages are full of interest, Her pen is graphic; her research is svident, but not too obtrusive. Of all the King's favourites, poor Nell Gwyn is, por haps, the least objectionable. Tho, authorers does not seek to palliate her conduct, but there is, nevertheless, a touch of kindliness in her references to the wildosi orenture that evor was in a Court." Anyone who wishes to read of Charles and his courtiersand courtesans will find this book absorbingly interesting, and. their appreciation of the printed page will be snhanced by the excellent portmits of byegona celebrities,
In Fear of a Throne. By R. ANDOM. London:
Stanley Paul & Co.
No one who has read "We Phrvo and Troddies will require to be told that R. Andon kes a humorist, with a rare imagination and a belter command of pure English than the average novelist of the day. He has set himself to write what is nothing more or lewe thau a Burlesque of "The Prisoner of Zoada,” and the result of his ingenuity is a lappy blond of Anthony Hope. Stanley Weyman and Mexi Pemberton in their most ingenious and imagīts" tive woods. The four friends, released from their office stools for the customary summer holiday, project a cycling tour of a petty European State. Troadies bears a striking resemblance to the weak-minded prince of the blood, the heir to the throne. The king is on his death-bed, and political intriguo is busy as to his successor Troddloske mistaken for the prince, is kidnapped and carried off to an almost imprg noble castle, where most of the action takes place. Thero

The story is prefaced, we may remark, by a quotation from H. A. Giles' “Chiang Tax," and it in. profusely and well illustrated by GW. Wakefield,

The proem, to this story recalls the obscicul story of Demeter and Perseploun. It is a delightful tale of love, written with charming grace, and gripping the interest from start to Suish. Opening in a fashionable house in Clarges Street, the scene soon shifts to a farm house in Lincolnshire, and then the reader is taken to the sunny slopes of Sicily, where the modern Demeter a writer of prose poems, is joined by her | beautiful daughter, the Persephone and the heroine of the tale. But it is not merely an exposition of the re-birth of a mother's love. There are several comples to be paired, and yet there is no sense of bewildermont, no aggravat. It is a smoothly ing analysis, no involved plot. written story, perhaps somewhat. Idyllic for these bumdrum times, but instinct humanity and

allow ourselves to forget the slings and arrows of our everyday existence. There is me good charater drawing, and Mrs. Parfe ment, with ber caustic. sayings and
motherly expansiveness, is fit to place side by side with George Eliot's Mrs. Poyser. The descriptive passages are full of pictaresqueness and not too long to prove tiresome. They show the sathoress to be a keen observer of nature and Fossessed of the power of enabling her readers. to see with her eyes. It is long since we met such an engaging story of pure lore.

À noʻable demonstration was by Drs. Lassar and Bishop, who took dandruff scales from the head of a student who was losing his hair, and, having mele a pomade of them with vaseline, rubbed the same upon a guinea-pig, and the pig became bald. (Bee Geo. Thomas Jackson, M.D., on diseases of ekin, 4th edition.)
