ing and profitable robber plantations, giving employmest to vast bars of Europeans, Javanese, Tomile, and Chinese. It is this remarkable evolution which has brought so prominently into notice an outlying portion of the British Empire, previously but little known to the antravelled Englishman.
The story of the introduction of the Herra brazilisnak into Malaya i
a ia a veritable roman^A. In 1873, at the suggestion of Sir Joseph Hooker, Director of Kew Garden, Mr. James Collins (afterward Government Botanist in Singapore) want to the Amazons and alluted some hundreds of seeds of
rubber. Most Par
of them faild to germinate
after
thoir son voyage, and only about a dezon plants were raised at Kew and sent out to Calcntis, The climate there not saiting them, they dind, and it was not nul 1876 that Mr. II. A. Wickbam, commissioned
by the Kaw anthori ties, sucorded in bringing home some 70,000 seeds, from which about 2800 plants were raised. A consignment of these medlings was sent out to the Botanical Gardens of Ceylon and to the newly-founded cardens of Singapore, but by an accident the latter batoh wore destroyed. A second lotoftwenty-two despatched the next year were saconsfally planted by the Curator, Mr. Murton. Some of these original trees are still standing, and one of them is believed to be the biggest ribber tres in existenes. It is from these fow specimens sent from Kow to Ceylon and Singapore that has ang the great indus try of elevated rubber at industry greated parts of the world.
The advent of the
during
an unprecedented demand for rubber, and to in- crease the supply Malayan plant-rs have the past in years rooted ap their coffee plants- tions and wept away vast areas of forest. All over the Pminants there are now to be seen flour- ishing robber plantations where but a few years ago stood the primeval jungle. Roudsand railways have multiplied, now villages have spring RP labourers bate poured into the country, and Europeans bave hastened out to act as mans gere and assistants. Upwards of 9.000.000 soeds and plants have been distributed from the Singapore Gardens alone, as well large bambors from Ceylon, Nor has the cultivation by any manne as yet reached its limits, and he would be a bold who
would predict the artout to which the industry will ultimately attain. From 1906

W Mincing me at over 12. per lb This, of course, wis too high for commercial poses, and it soon delined to more rea sonable figures. But the remarkable rice Prsia, British str., 2,744, A. Leckett. 25th iu price of an article which could be pro- duced at from Is. to 18. 5d, per lb, to such a height at this, caused an immense sensation and greatly stimalatel te cultivation of the Hevea. Investors readily realized that under the conditons of climate, soil, and situation which obtained in British Malaya an assured steady profit could be reaped from the cultivation of rubb 1, son if prices fell considerably from those ruling. Moreover, they also recognized that wild rubber is destined to become more ex- pensive in proportion as the ratherers have to farther and farther afield for it, and that it art be eventually drive ont of the field by ninst the cultivated article. They saw, in fact, the triumph of the organized and scientific produs- tion of plantation rabber of standard "quality" over the morganized, irra sulae supply of vary-for ing value emanating from the jungles of South America and Africa.
