M. BERTEAUX'S DEATH.

KILLED DF AEROPLANE'S PROPELLER.

|BY THE "DAILY MALE" CORRESPONDENT.]

Paris, May Bist M. Bartean, the French Minister of War, was killed by an soropane oarly this morning at Issy-lon Moulinmax while witnessing the start of the seroplane race from Paris to Madrid:

M. Monis, the Prime Minister, was severely injured. Among the other injured were H. Henri Denisah de la Mourths, the famous sportsman sad serovart, and M. Antoine Monis, son of the Premier. A large number of spectators also suffered injuries through a panic among the crowd at the moment of the fatality.

There were probably 400,000 people on and around the vast manoeuvring ground at Issy when

daylight broke this morning. They had come in special trains, brakes, omnibuses, motor cars and cabs, and on hingles, and hundreds of entbasiasts had walked miles from the opposite end of the mity to sea the start of the great race. It was at 6.30 a.m. that the tragedy of Mr, Berteang's death occurred. M. Monis and the War Minister, accompanied by M. Lépine and M. Jeau Dapay, ex-Minister of Commerce and proprietor of the Petit Parisien, which organis ed the race, had left the loial stand to inspoot the machines at the starting point. While they were there M. Train, the inventor of a mono- plane of peculiar torpedo-likoconstruction, which

was possible, risking the life of my passenger to keep my machino in the air and pass over their heade. I kad almost saccealed when the machine, having lost all way, fell like a stone. For a second I had the impression of a brood of chick me scattering beneath me. An instant later the monoplane struck the ground.'

The panic which took place among the crowd when the news had been went round that M Bortesur and M. Monis Injured produced populer commotion, which the troops and polico were utterly powerless to cope with... In an instant the barricades were broken down, Infantry and cavalry were brushed asido sud thousands of hystorical spectators ran irre- sistibly towards the fallen motoplone. This mad mob eams into collision with another mass of people fleeing from the scene of the accident and an indescribable scene of confusion followed.

For at least fifteen minutes men, womon, and children fought with each other and many persons were knocked over and trodden on. Finally two squarons of cavalry came to tha resoud and something like ozder was restored, By nine o'clock no fewer than sixty people had been attended to in the mabulanov station adjoining the aerodrome.

As the result of the death of the War Minis ter all official ceremonies Lavo been cancelled or postponed.
