NEWS FROM: THE HOME PRESS.

A DOG NEWSBOY,

Under thinabave headline, Oar Bumi Animals han this to say about Spot, a dog known to every body at Rockville Coutro, Long Island: "Early every morning the boy and dog start out with big boodle of papers. Sometimes the boy rides a bicycle, but generally the rounds are made on foot. The dog takes the papers as Jhey are handed to him and knows just where

is s to go. Trotting through rates and often ju aping tenors to make short cuts, be deposits the papers carofully upon the doorsteps, and hurries hack for more work. He has al learn

d to meet the train that brings the papers and to pick out the packages addressed to his master, and carry them to the store, a block and a half away. Spot thoroughly understands the bus ness, and so gapable hus he become that it would now be impossible for his mator to do all the work without his assistance."

JEWISH COLONY IN EGYPT. The Jarish Chronicle annonnees that thu General Jewish Colonising organisation bas acquired a territory, 10,030 sores in extent, at Rapha, inthe El Arisch distriot, for the purpowo of founding a Jewish colony.

Under the auspices of the Organisation. miante examination of Rapha has taken pinos aring the last 18 months, and wcording to their repert-the district is especially fitted for the production of almonds, apricot

vory best quality, and caster, and fantom oferty treas, sacalyptus it is believed that the rino grape could also be planted with great snccars. It is stated that the water apply is good and that the Arabs haave conducted successtal colonising experi ments in the neighbourhood.

The proposed colony will be situated within the ares offered to the late Dr. Herzl, leader of the Zionist movement, in 1903, by the Egyptain Government at the instance of the British anthorities. The amount of land then available for colonisation was not foun | large enough for the parpors of an extensive settlement. Tu Biblical days Bapba formal part of Palestine.

The Philippines Co, str. Zafiro left Manila on the 13th lnst., and is due here to-day at day- Light.

THE BAULIENT RAIN GANGE. The credit of inventing an instrument to messure the rain has been nonally given to Castelli, a contemporary of Galileo, In 1639. Dr. V. Wada, director of the Cores Metero- rological Observatory, howovor, has recuatly discovered documentary ovidoneo which puts back the discovery of the rain-gauge to a mali pariter date. In 1442. we are told that Sojo, a Cerasu King, had made an instrument of bronzo for measuring the rainfall. This was in the form of a vase, fifteen inches deep and seven inches in diameter, which was set on a pillar in a suitable situation. It was the duty of certain officials to go and measure the height of the water in the vessel after rain, and report to the King. This discovery of the rain-gauge is related in the Corean historical records. An acount of it is given in " Knowlodge,"

THE "BLIN" MEDIUË. The story of the exposure of a medium, as told by Dr. J. Raimond, is quoted by the British Medical Journal, A scoptical frisad, Dr. Raimond says, attended a "magnatio" porforra- naco. Pressed by the lady of the house to ask the medium some questions, he requested him to direct hie altention to a wall house in the Pyrenees this he invited him to describa The medium, after going through some of the myatical sawings of the air thought necessary for these purposes, described a bucay, Tho description was fairly carrost, a fact not mar vellous in itself, inasmuch as one small house in the Pyronses is very like another. Tie sceptio provaded to question the operator farther, nsking him to inform him what his father had been about that day. The seer swered: "I see your father at a grost diatanes from here," and he went on to narrate from hour to hour what the old

gentle- man had been doing during the day, satering Into the mort minute partienlare, and ending: "And now he is laid comfortably in a bed of such and such & fashion," The whole party listened with rapt attention to the narrative, dad at the end of it looked to the sceptic to mog whether the medium was corroat. Ho said quietly to the medium: "There is only one slight error in the description. My father has. been dead these twenty years." The medium. taking him by the arm, said significantly, "Sir, I cannot wilmit. this objection as valid." It is a wiss child that knows its own father." The sceptio, thus hopelessly rate I had to beat Ignominious retreat, pursued by the Homerio laughter of the company.

it came to rest on the deck. On picking it up

I found it to be a snipe, one of whose legs bad evidently been recently injured. The limb was neatly bound with grass, which the congealed blood matted together, making altogether an admirable piece of surgery. The bird, which was somewhat exlicuated, showed no alarm at being handled, and made no attempt to escape. It was placed on the flat roof of the dock cabin, and given a dish of water and some shreds of meat, and it remained there antil the steamer was close to the Tyros, when it gained sufficient strength and courage to complete its journey of 45 miles, the greater part of which it had covered as a stowaway.
