THE TROUSER SKIRT.

PARISIAN AUDIENCE LAUGHS IT OFF THE STAGE,

The opinion of the Paris public on the trouser skirt was expressed unhesitatingly last month at the Couélio Francaiso during the dress rehears- al of “ After Me,” the Low play by Henry Dorn. stein, author of The Thief."

Pearl merchants claim for their Gambier wares equality in shoon and opsline glow with those of the Red Sea, and Persian Gulf. Thor point to the necklace of Queen. Wilhelmina, bought under the advics of a Dutol expert as a bargain" at 120,000 francs. It goes but once round her neck, and to make it au easy fit has a long clasp. The pearle composing this necklace have a fugitive iridescence of rare beauty. It comes and goes like blushes on young cheeks, sometimes deepening into vivid Lines, and then fading into a paler orient, and Bover resembling the commun mother-of-pearl.

The Gambier fisheries are, I hear, in the hands of a syndicate that takes care not to glut the market. The pearls are drawn up from ninety icet of water by a diver who remains below for three minutes. They are, I hear, well- known to London and Viennese houses. Those of Indo-China aro at their best of about the quality of the Cingalese. The drawback is a large proportion of irregularly shaped I and distorted pearls, though they are working jewellers who prefer these for whimsically fancy artioles.
