THE TROUSER SKIRT.
PARISIAN AUDIENCE LAUGHS IT OFF THE STAGE,
The opinion of the Paris public on the trouser skirt was expressed unhesitatingly last month at the Couélio Francaiso during the dress rehears- al of “ After Me,” the Low play by Henry Dorn. stein, author of The Thief."
The house was packed with represiouta'ives of Paris socisty. Adress rehearsal at tho Francaiss is a social as well as s dramatic event, and
everybody who is anybody was there When the curtain rise on the first act Mlle. Provost, one of the prottiest aotrasses in Paris, was seen to be in in armchair and puffing gently at a sigarotle.
She put her feet up on a stool in front ofhor, and the house rooked with laughter. Ille, Provost wore a tronsor skirt. The top part of the dress was pretty enough.
It was of tivid green satia, toned down by a tunic of transparent Tulle. Only about twa inches of trouser wero visible, Eut the effect of these trousers was hope- lessly inelegant, and the house laughed, and evon hcoted a little,
Thon Mllo. Provost roso, and the honno fairly shrieked with laughter. A few minutes later the ran upstairs, sud the offect of this in trouser skirts was deliciously ridiculous. Every time the trouser skirt came into view the nuł ozie laughed, and if the play had not proved 8-2011 strong one as it did that dressmaker's freak would hare wrooked it.
ANOTHER CONTUMA..
Be clearly did the dress-rehearsal audience male this felt that the author, D. Bornstein, and M. Clarotie, the manager of the Francoiso, hare requested Mile. Provost to wear another costume at the first porformauce, which will taka plaes to-morrow evening.
Mila. Provost herself. las abandoned the trouser skirt without regret. "I did not enjoy my experiones," she said this afternoon, “ard I am glad that I shall not have to usergo the ordeal of wearing the costume again on the stage, I should like to point out, however, that it is quite in keeping with the part I am playing bit of a very eccentric and rather fast young -duchess.
"However, the public is our master, and the public has langhed the trouser skirt out of existence for the present, at the Comédia Française at all events."
An using rumour is current in Paris this overing that a numbor of well-known women in Park are determined to fore the hands of the police authorities and make them prohibi! the wearing of the trosor skiet in the public streets. They will do this by appearing in public in trousers of the usual men's out,
The was ing of masculins alties by women and of femalo attire by men is a legal offence in Francs, except at Carnival time. The police, therefore, would be obliged to arrest the woun Wearing trousers. These would immediately prolost against thoir arrest nnless the wearera of trouser skirts be made liable to arrest as well, for the law says nothing about the form of trousers which are illegal dress for women.
MOBBED IN THE WEST-END.
The new "harm "skirt male its appearance in the streets of London roccatly, but the wearer faced no better that did the fair "pionmargin Paris and Madrid, for she was mobbed by aus- ed erowls and had to take rafuge in flight.
The daring lady, who was accompanied by amale friend, was first sou walking in Regent strect, and 'did her best to appear nu concerned in her eccentric attire, as though any lady could be unconcorned while she was woaring pink Turkish trousers, which a strangely eat skirt of dark blue velvet left uncovered, and with an Oriental blue turvau with white feather of blameless millinery Fosed jauntily on her bend,
She was soon followed by a chafflug, jeer- ing crowd, which quickly assumed auch large proportions that the police had to regalato
it.
Prosently she slipped into a drapory storo in Regent-stroot, but the crowd awaited
her reappearance, and followed bør for home distanco further. Then daring garo way before cpriosity, and the lady of the barem skirt escaped further ridicule by hailing a'cad and driving off;
The London Express has been canvassing the
·Issders of London fashions and others on the subject. The uoy skirt appears to be unani. monsly condemined. From Mrs. Flora Annie Steel (the novelist) the paper received the fol lowing tologram:-"I have no interest in fasbions which, as at present sonu, do not concern beauty, art, or decency.

The Paris correspondent of Truth writes. Tho Pinance Minister kopos, we hear, to fud a budgetary resource in the pearl fisheries of Jado-China and the deep waters of the chann dividing the group of Gambier islets from Otaboite. Pearl merchants claim for their Gambier wares equality in shoon and opsline glow with those of the Red Sea, and Persian Gulf. Thor point to the necklace of Queen. Wilhelmina, bought under the advics of a Dutol expert as a bargain" at 120,000 francs. It goes but once round her neck, and to make it au easy fit has a long clasp. The pearle composing this necklace have a fugitive iridescence of rare beauty. It comes and goes like blushes on young cheeks, sometimes deepening into vivid Lines, and then fading into a paler orient, and Bover resembling the commun mother-of-pearl.
The Gambier fisheries are, I hear, in the hands of a syndicate that takes care not to glut the market. The pearls are drawn up from ninety icet of water by a diver who remains below for three minutes. They are, I hear, well- known to London and Viennese houses. Those of Indo-China aro at their best of about the quality of the Cingalese. The drawback is a large proportion of irregularly shaped I and distorted pearls, though they are working jewellers who prefer these for whimsically fancy artioles. The divers say that a malevolent divinity afflicted the mother oyster with choleruio ommps, and that hence the contortion It is counted unlucky at Saigon to wear them The fanoy of a working jeweller of genius now
