GERMAN SHIPBUILDING
INDUSTRY..
PHENOMENAL GROWTH.
(BY A CORRESPONDENT OF THE LONDON “DAILY · TELEGRAPH.")
The progress, position, and prospects of the German shipbuilding industry are well worth attention in this country just now. In 1908, for the first time in hlatory, our German rivals launched more warship tonnage than we did. It is now announced that a giant steamer, largor than anything we have built in this country, is shortly to be laid down on the sbcoks at the Vulcan yard, Stettin. The new Gorman Noval Estimates provide for a record expenditure upon now ships, Considerable extensions are under way in the German shipbuilding industry. These and many other circumstances combine to invest the progress of our rivals with special interest.
to
Indeed, the annals of industrialism afford few more striking chapters than that of the history of German shipbuilding From obscurity and inseeurity and insignificance, and out of maze of natural diffonities, the Gorman ship. builder has within a single generation risen position second only to that held by his powerful British rival. Thirty years ago Ger. many, as a shipbuilding country, was a place of no importance. Now a British Prime Minister and a British First Lord of the Admiralty have been constrained to admit that in the speed and efficiency of fighting ship construction we hold little or no advantage over the Germans, The German shipbuilder has come to the front with almost dramatic saddennoss. As recently as 1885 less than 25,000 tons of iron and steal shipping wore launched in the year. In four out of the last six-yasrs than 300,000 tons have been put into tho water by German builders Between 1881 and 1887 the North-German Lloyd alone had 40 000,000 marks worth of ships built од the Clyde Now
Gery builds her own ships and competes with us for others custom. In 1881 the registered tonnage of Germany's merchant steamships stood no higher than 215,000 tons, practically the whole of which had been built abroad, mostly in Britain, Now Germany's tonnage reaches 3,959,000 tons, mostly built at home. A generation ogo wa built most of Germany's war vessels. In 1908 Germany launched 97,00 tons of warships against our 49,000 tons.

PRACTICAL EDUCATION.
And the progress revealed by those figures becomes all the more remarkable when it is horno in mind that the German shipbuilders have ludiers, and all fittings and connections complete, to overcome a combination of abstacles quite Buknown in this country. Here we have coal and iron supplies and first-class aatural harbours all practically side by side; where in Germany the coalfields are far removed from the iron sup.. plies, and both are far in and, while of good, is due, no doubt, to hor practical system of Much of Germany's progress in shipbuilding natural harboura that country is almost destitute, education.
