FASHIONS AND FANCIES,

SKATING DEESS.

Roller-skaling is a timely tople, and the clothes that are donned for this amusing form of oxercise. They are varied in character, both ön men and on wonen. The former wear anything they like, except pyjamas, or drossing gowns, or diring suits, or sloping sacks, or orickot flananly, or hockey garb, or bathing undress, or roving gear. Riding onstume and a yachting sait have boou stea rollicking round the floor a Earl's Conet. Onò or two men have rinked in heavy overcoats. Some take the floor in frock coat and silk, hat. But the múltado wors jacket suits.

WHAT WOMEN KIRK IN,

Wo barg constituted ourselves thio advoo tos of a material that one varsly 600 montioned in the many dress articles of the day, and yet is one of the most asoful on the list. It is veiling of the woolloa kind. It began existence many JORN go as man's volin French dressmakers ellad i voile," and this word, mispronounced in a variety of ways, passed across the counters of our English shops for a sense or two. “I want some blue voy)," the customer might sy rud hare the syllablo tossed back to her as "ile." The stuff is now known 13 "railing,"

and is composes gowns for sketing in, being so light yet warm, house gowns, evening drozzer, tea gowns, dressing jackots, and underwear. And yet one seldom sees it wentioned,

A PRETTY WOMAN.

One of the prettiest women rinking on BE evening of this week was wearing a pleated voile skir trimmied with a band of something white, possibly voile, too, pied with greou on either side. The bodice was carried up over the shouldera in princess pianforo fashion over blouse of brown not, over gold tissue embroider ed in grosu.azd blue, colours which showed, tui faintly through the meshes of the not. The toque was green, with pleasants' feathers starting from a little morsel of intemely blus plumage The band of white on the skirt was matched by the trimming that finished the bretelle part of the pinefore bodice. Brown boots and gloves to-match completed a very fastoful and-suitable toiletto.

A MORE ELABORATE SKATING GOWN Black velvet tunio edged with ermine above a black skirt bordered with wide gulen constitutes three-fourths of an elaborato skating. gown, the other quarter being represented by the loose almost shapeless bodice of the satin, opening upou a chiffon rest, lived with flesh-coloured satin, and pretending to transparent. The sleeves are ent in one piece with this hodiee, according to the singularly ugly and incon venient fashion of the moment. It gives such a baggy, loose, woman-at-the-washtub affoet eren to the handsomest goru.

THE SAILOE COLLAE.

This very fashionable collar, applied to esening gowns us well as all others just now, distinguishes many a sogr costume on the rink, proving it to be of present reason. A blue serga costumo luns this collar bor- dered with black for, and is trimmed with lines of back braid laid horizontally on front and back each now eading in a little satin-covered button. The skirt is narrow, but not extravi gaufly so. The hat is blue felt, with deband of black fur round the crown, and resting in the contro of the for, a band of cretonno in vivid colours, its flowers outlined with glittering silver thren 1. The touch of bright colour was very telling, amid so mach that was sombre,

THE VERY LATEST HAT.

The Eliaue capots its down upon the head and rapports an immense bow in velvet of the same calour. So large is this bow, and so pointed are the enda (our old friends the dogs' ears, but immense in size), that tho effect of the new hat is as of some swooping sinister birth of proy. Perhaps it gives all the better value to a smiling, pretty face.

A TYPICAL DREAS.

The gown is of embroidered cloth, smoke gabit is visible only beneath the grey velvet overdreas, which reaches from shoulder line to the knees, resembles a well-est bathing. dress of the old-fashioned sort more anything elsa, clings closely to the fi ure, in short-waisted, und so slight fulness, sus- tained by a gold cord which is knotted at the left side and falls in two short tasselled euda. A PLEASANT COMPROMISE. There are womon of good taste who know bow to compromise between what is the fashion and what is really graceful and becoming; and there are modistes in Paris wal milliners in London who are cloverly helping them. Here, for instance, is a perfectly charming gown with nothing extravagant about it, and yet nothing that could be accused of being ont of fashion. The underdress is dull serpent-groen satin, jast escaping contact with the ground all round. Over it falls on overdress of grey marquisette, plain from the waist for some twenty inch, and thence closely pleated under a heading of grey satin ribbon finished at one side with a wide, at bow. I be tunic is hemmed with a band of similar ribbon, and another is sewn on it midway between the two. The folds fall in natural lines, and there is no compression what- aror at the back. The bodice is draped fichu fashim. This was seen on Friday, the fashion- able day at the Faluís de Glace in the Champs Elysées. Some wonderful goran and coats are seen there, for "all Paris" assembles to see and ba soon, and the rivalry in chiffons has a kind of teurament.-X and 3. in the Globe.

A GOLFING "FISH STORY."

The Scotsman relates it:-

While a four-ball foursome was being played over the Beanly golf course macently, a curious incident occurred. One of the players had lifted ont the pin at the sixth hole to allow the others to approach, and was in a half-stcoping position. whon, says the Scotsman, a large trout whizzed past his head and dropped on the green at his foot. He was at first inclined to look upon the incident as a practical joke played upon him by his opponents; bot this was not the case, and the conclusion was come to that the fish bad fullen from the grasp of some overhead bird, the mark of the bird's talons being clearly discernible on the body of the fish. The day was very misty, and the bird was not observed by the players. Some twenty yards from the sixth green flows a burn, and there a large number of sea and brown trout are at present spawning. One of these, weighing eighteen onnces, had evidently been picked up by the bird.

FOUL BREATH.

WOMEN'S GREATEST MISFORTUNE.

The old saying that "distance lends enchantment" was never more aptly to the point than when applied to those people whose breath is laden with evil smelling odours. Many persons appear most attractive at a distance, but produce a feeling of pity and disgust when close to because of the condition of their breath. For instance, it makes little difference how beautiful a woman máy hc, or how charming her. manner it her breath is foul, her charm is gone and she is at a dis- advantage when ever she comes in contact with other people. Foul breath in women arouses in man a feeling of repugnance and a desire to get out of the company of such a woman as quickly as possible, and even women will avoid hier. It is therefore important for every woman who values her personal attraction to take such care of herself that this unpleasant and unnecessary complaint is avoided or corrected. Men, women and children who are troubled with this complaint will drive their friends away more rapidly than any other affiction. People do not realise their breaths are bad because they are like those who are constantly employed among paints and varnishes-they get used to what is to others a most offensive smell. In nearly all cases this condition is due to Constipation and a disordered Stomach, and a coated Tongue, slight Headache, and feverishness are the sure signs that the digestive organs are retaining quantities of impurities from which the system should be free, thereby causing the Breath to become charged with the foul odour. In Dr. Morses' Indian Root Pills there will be found a searching, cleansing remedy which will drive the masses of decaying corruption--that poison the Elood and contaminate the breath-- from the system through the regular channels. They get at the cause as ho other remedy does. They get at the the foundation of the complaint. They give you clean bowels, a healthy stomach, a lively liver, and blood that is rich and red. They are safe, sure and reliable remedy, and will prevent many of the complaints so common if taken once or twice a week to keep the system a healthy condition. They are purely vegetable, and their action is not accompanied by any nauseous or griping sensation, but is mild and gentle.

For all complaints arising from Imperfect Digestion and Impure Blood these Pills re unexcelled. They are a Perfect Blood Purifier a positive and permanent cure for Biliousness, Indigestion, Constipation Headaches," Sallow Complexion, Liver and Kidney Troubles, Piles,
