THE DANCE OF TO-DAY.

Not yet have we burled Madame Cumesifo : she sits slumbering, bowed in some secluded nook, one of a sad group of discarded, chaperons. We have no use for chaperons nowadays, and still less use for Madame Cumeolio; but that lady was over tactless, and the mere knowledge that she is not wanted will be enough to pat trength into hor failing limbs and a spur to lier dying faculties. The hour of her awakon- ing is at hand; the faithful are at her gatea, calling for her as the prohats of Band called

a six months' study of the Greek vasos in the British Musum, Poor Mudaine Cameelfo! Will she fall into that swoon which has become as much a flin of the past as Tagliona's pirouette, or will she rear her planed head and sweep imajestic from the room? Ska will realize with au foy chill flat there are her trust. ed natrons disporting themselves. Slowly it will dawn on her that the gentle lady she left sitting over her latling, a little lace cup on her comoly head, husi vanished. The cup has been throws, with the Indian shawl, to the four winds, and the matron has become a riddy, irrea; on- sible creature who dances And such dances!

Sick at heart, the poor done will turn to the Eaunts of the young, in search of the demure débutante wluss stops she used to guide so joal- only. With rague foreboding she will sweep to the pestost ball-room, where a "boy-and-girl" dance is in full swing: where gilded yonth," un chaperoned, shuilles and slips at variance with an inebriate orchestra. ' How will the strun roly distorted and ancouth attitudes of the modern dancer atrike her astonished oyo? Will sho recognize the Blushing dénitaute, or any of the danoce she finds her dancing?

And yet it is not so very long since well brought up mailene sut, envious but kloof, déclin ing, at the command of Mama, to take part in any but square dances. The valso, an innovation and, in the oyes of muay, an indecent abemini. tion (Byron had some very hard words Tor it), was considered fast and was only danced by the very emsucipated. Yet this much-maligned valeo bids fair to be eternal. The polkaims come and gone; the Washington Post hald very brief sway; square desacos, except at Court balls, are practically things of the pist; and the vulso still reigns supreme ver all the civilized world. Endearing Wallz-to thy more melting tande Bow Irish Jig, and ancient rig adcon Sootch reels ay unt! and shuntry dance forgo Your future claims to each fantastic tos Waltz-Waltz alone both legs and arnis demuus.

Osay, shall dalt Romaika's heavy ronui, Fandango's wriggle, or Bolero's bound; Caa aught from cold Kamsebutka to Cape Horn With Waltz compare, or after Waltz be borng? So said Byrou in the Regeney; and the valse, though it has its fashions, it is true, like every thing else, at bottom remains the same. It has been hopped and glided and jerked and slither. ed, so slow at times that it is a anestion whether the couples are moving at all; se fast at others as almost to las both tune and rhythm, but all the same it is essentially our old friend the valse. It has been called by strange transatlantic names until the bewildered Britou wonders whether he is not dancing ad American drink but the unsic to which it is dancad is the baunting languraus strain to which the chignoned ladies of the sixties loved to glide. A proof of this is the way in which old tunes crop up again after they lavo in forgotten for years." Call it the "Boston" (why not tlio "Prairie Oyater") if Fon will, but this does not alter the fact that it

is danced to the familiar Blue Danube" or to dancer of minuets. We cau go through any other old Strauss favourite. The truth is that the tune is to a great extoni responsible for the life or death of a dange. Chopin understood the gentimental value of the valsó metro, its "melt. ing tune," its melancholy and its longing, and this very anduces has made it indispensable to the ballroom. Perhaps we take our pleasures sad ly, or perhaps it is only that it tempers the gai- ety of what might otherwise be a soullo frole anyhow, the velas tune still. Hires, and will go on living for many a long day. The polka, with its empty jig-jig, has passed and its plecs has been filled by the two-step. How loup this dirkie mes sure will romain is open to conjecture; but it will last longer than the polka, by reason of a certain pathetic element dear to the heart of the Careless dancer.

We are very Greek to-day; a neutral tinted back-ground; a faw garlands and a classic Egore not danging, bat interpreting "are all that our refined taste can bear, bat it is not so long since we sat absorbod while tronpes of imported darkies cakewalked before us; not so long, in- deed, since wo cake-walked ourselves in our more abandoned moments. The darkies have been banished to the lesser music-hals, where their flexible grace is still duly appreciated, bat the airs to which thay danced were too good to die. We invented a quainty more decorous antic of our own, suitable to tho ball-foom, and, as a concession to the memory of Madame Cameelfo, we called it the two- step; and so wo atill capor gladly to the unclassic strains of Dahomey" or "Happy Darkies." True, we have bolstered up our pride by christen- ing at least one of our dances Salome", but it, is a question who would be more distressed-- Herod or Salome-could either see tho.way we dance it.

It is the old story of the saraland over again- In the days of all, when Court ladies were real Court ladies and coquetted carauioniously with their rapiered gallants, the gipsies brought a wild and lawless dance from the East which they called the saraband and which they performed before the great ones of the earth. It was far too Eastern in character for the formal beauties of a Court, but the music was to their taste-80 a stately dance, e thing of many curtseys, was adapted to the gipsy air. Then the Court musicians took to writing measures on this pattern, and the saraband as we know it was, born. We shall not dance the saraband, or the minuet, or the gavotte again, unless ear dresseskors give us hoops once more, and this they are hardly likely to do probably because they know that we have lost the art of standing for any length of time upon -one leg, a stork-like quality essential to the
