THE JAPANESE TARIFF..
THE SUGGESTION OF THE LONDON - CHAM-
BER OF COMMERCE,
The following communication has been sent to the members of the deputation who waited on Sir Edward Grey at the Foreign Office en the Japanese tariff question:--
Bir,I have been requested to refer to the depatation from certain chambers of commerce which waited upon Sir Edward Grey at the Foreign Oftee on November 24 last respecting the injury threatened to British trade by the proposed duties in the now Japanese tariff, and in particular to the remarks of the representa- tives of this chamber (Sir E. H, Holden and Bir Monglagu Turner, as to the probabla ad verse effect of the tariff upon Anncial interests on this side, sad especially upon the Japanese Government itself as a borrower in the British money market.
now in
Ba
It was then pointed out that if the proposed tariff duties were porsisted in, the desiro to assia Japan Anancially on this sidlo! would be considerably discouraged. I
a position to inform yon that an additional loan is about to be brought out; but," of course, without sny undertaking ns to a modification of the proposed tari in the interests of British traders. It has already been clearly demonstrated that Brilish merchants and mann. facturers are more adversely affected than any other country, and, therefore, it will be obviously to the interests of manufacinrers and exporters, whose surplus. capital was at the service of the banks in the ease of previous Japanese loans, to en- lara proteat acuinat its similar employment in the future unless fatisfactory assurances are spoedily coming as to the intoulions of the JapaneRÉ Government in regard to the tariff. Without these assurances it would not appear that tho lending of further money to Japan-apart from the purely financial aspect of the matter-can be of any substantial benefit to the general investor, who, frequently a trader himself; also looks to the Japanese and other foreign markets as an outlet for his prodnations. It is assume that your chamber will be in general accord with these views, aul I am to suggest that they should be emphasised locally in such a manner as may be deemed best.I am, sir, yours faithfully,

Bir-What is the meaning of all the fuss which the Free Trade manufacturers of Lanc1- shire and Yorkshire are making about the new Japanese tariff, with its, enormously increased duties on English manufactured goods? Have we not beou told for years by the Cobden Club that tariffe do us no harm, and that they only injure the countries that lory thou? Why on earth, then, should we trouble P
Can it be that Free Tradera are at length alowly waking up to the relentless logic of facts, and are beginning to zen that Lord Salisbury was right after all when he warned us that no forein nation in arranging ita tariffs over paid the smallest attention to Great Britain, as she has nothing wherewith to combat them? La Sir E. H. Holden serious in suggest- ing that English investors should boycott the new Japanese loan? Hay not the Prime Mini- tor himself told us that the more our money flows into foreign investments the better? Sir Edward Grey has a much more effective weapon at band if only he were not hidebound by the shackles of Cobdenism.
The Japanese and other nations would speedi ly moderats their tarifs if they received a hint that Great Britain would no longer take such treatment lying down, but that retaliation would be used.I am, sir, your obedient servant,

CHINESE ACQUISITIONS,
In a private room at the top of the Natural History Museum, say the Times, lie sevon pack- ing-cases just arrived from the Far East. They are dull-looking enough, and would be carted through the streets without exciting the last cariesity; but when they were opened they proved a scientific treasure mine-as, indeed, the Museum steff had reason to expect. The boxes are not large, and one or two are quite small, yet among them they contain the skins of hundreds of animals not folded and crashed, but packed as regularly and closely as cigars, each skin pre served in an almost oglindrical form with legs and tail stretched out straight behind, and so companied by the skulls.
