The immediate outlook for the market is somewhat uncertain. Though there is a large amount of produce, larger, probably than at this time last year, still to be shipped from China and India, the visible supply of Sliver in Bombay, Shanghai and London is unusually large and compares with the Stocks at the end of last year as follows
IS LIFE WORTH LIVINUP. That depends on the Liver." This is an old adage, true in more than one sense.
When the liver is out of order life is a bardon. Headache, loss of appetite, furred tongue, bad breath, bad taste in the mouth, spots Boating before the eyes, constipation, loss of vigour followed by more serious symptoms are the result of an inactive liver. Dr. Moreo's Indian Root Pills have a world-wide reputation as THE GREAT LIVER REMEDY and DIGES FIVE 1910. TONIC.
The improvement which took place towards the close of 1909 was maintained until the 25th February, 1910, when the unexpected announce. ment that the Import duty on Bar Silver would be largely increased, caused heavy selling order to be sent from Bombay to this market, so that on that day quotations here folld. This was followed by some smaller declines which brought the price down to 23 d. on the 1st March. From this point, however, under the stimulas of support from India, where confidence had to some extent been restored, and also from China, the market steadily recovered during March and Aptil, while during May and Jane prices remain-

The enormous amount of Silver, which at one time tots production of this camp from its discavory was estimated to amount to upwards of to date amounts to about £9,600,000, and £4,000,000. Early in July alarge portion of the judging from the ore reserves in sight at the Stocks in London was controlled by this group, present time it is considered probable that it while sales to a considerable amount, chiefly for will produce a total of £20,000,000. The rest of account of Chien, fell das, and the ballers, not Canada should produce about 3,000,000 ounces having shipped the Silver from China, wore during 1910... forced to buy back here on the best terms they could. This led to a sharp upward movement and Spot Silver was forced up to 253d., while Forward was quoted at 243d, only, a premium of d. on Spot Silver. As soon as this position had been pat straight the market reverted to the position of May and June and so contianel during August and September, with an upward movement during the latter month, when the eling quotation was 243d. About this time much attention was directed to India and China, both of which countries were reported to bó assured of most excellent crops. The outlook for Silver was regarded as most favourable, an it was considered possible that the Indian Government might find it necessary to bay Silver for the coinage of Rupees, whilst "China was expected to be a good bayer for payment of her Exports. This important increase of nearly £3,000,000 It was also at this time thought, proable that in the visible supplies of Silver in these markets the Indian speculators would under these should go far to meat the probable demand from circumstances have a favourable opportunity of China during the early months of 1911, but it unloading their large holdings. These figures cannot be prosperous outlook in India, which, it was hopod, taken as strictly sovqate, as shipments declared would necessitate purchases by the Indian for Indis are often sent on to Chine, while in Government, in 1910 for coinage to keep pace the same way shipments to Chinaares metimes with the expansion of trado, diverted to India. The large holdings of Silver both in India and London by the Indian spoor- lators have had a depressing influence on both markets daring the latter part of the year and have tended to check enterprise. At times this group have made important sales to China, some of which were replaced by fresh purchases here, but their holdings at the close of the year are very much reduced.
The Indian Government has again made no purchases of Silver, and at time of writing it Seems improbable that it will have to buy this reason. There is little doubt that the use of Gold for commercial transactions is tncreasing. and this naturally relieves the drain on Silver Rupees Tho delay in the shipment of produce also tends to postpone the demand for Silver Coin to a date when its effect will not be so much felt, as during the early months of the year Beranno skontd flow into the Treasury. The total holdings of Silver Rupees in the Treasury is now 2 Crores (at the Exchange of 16d. to the £ equalling £21,400,000), against 383 Crores (£25,833,000) at the end of 1909. The holdings of Silver Rupees in the Gold Standard Reservo, which at the end of 1909 amounted to 81 Crores, now |total 33 Crores. ⠀
China has again been an important buyor, not only in this market but in San Francisco and Bombay as well. While at times, she has sold freely here, actual shipments against these sales have baen smell and the Silver has been re- bought when the price of Silver and rates of Exchange in China have been favourable. This Empire has been favoured with excellent crops of sil kinds, an important item again being Boya Besus, estimated this year to amount to £5,000,- 000,but the export of the produce hasbeen greatly delayed by failures amongst the Native Banks, caused by undue speculation in Rubber. During the closing months of the year the export of produce has been brisk, but the demand for Silver by the China Banks has been freely met by the Indian speculators, so that the market shows no improvement as a consequence of this [173 enquiry. Shipments from London to Chios during the year amounted to £1,481,000, against £2.128,000 in 1902, whilst in addition China has received £1,400,000 from San Francisco, against about the same amount last your. A portion of the shipments from London was coined into British Dollars by the Bombay Mint. Dilicts have beag issued in China to establish a uniform system of Silver Carroney throughout the Empire in place of the elastic system of weights of Silver aud Dollars now in use, whilst it is understood that
