FUTURE BATTLESHIPS,

- MOTOR ENGINES FOR BRITISH

DREADNOUGHT.

to

An announcement, which foreshadows some extent the next departure in naval con- straction, is made in the Motor Boat. From this it appears that a set of motor engines of 36,000 h.p. for a battleship is now building in England. The subject is one of national importance, and the first appearance of the internal combus tion engine in place of steam in a Dreadnought is beuad to be an opoch-making event in the history of the world's națios,

From an article on the subject wo take the following extracta

The consummation which engineers declared only a few months ago to be yours distant has setually been achieved.

CONTRACTS PLACED FOR BRITISH BATTLESHIPS.

built by Scott's Shipbuilding and Engineering OREGON RAILROAD & NAVIGATION CO.

The Admiralty have placed contracta for two battleships, to be built in private yarde, in this your's Navy Programme." One vessel will be Company, of Greenock, and the other by Mosers. Cammell, Laird & Co., of Birkenhead. These vesels are to be of about 24,000 tons displuse- meat, being of the improved Monarch typo.

Ecott's Company are at present completing the buttleship Colossus, and their success on this occasion is due largely to the progress they have made fa the building of this vessel, as she is almost ready for her xicam trials. The company. also built the machinery for the St. Fincent and several armoured cruisers. They were also responsible for the building of the hull and the machinery of the armoured cruiser Argyll

Mosure. Cammell, Laird & Co., have not built a battleship for some yours, but were responsible for the construction of several pro-Drondnought

The design consists of eight-cylinder engines, practically two four-cylinder motors coupled in taudota, developing 12000 h.p, that is, 1500 hy. per cylinder, Three of those 12,000 hp.battleships. They, however, have built several units are in process of construction, ranking au protected oraisors and have on hand one of the aggrogato of 36,000 bp. The ongines will be now raisers of the Town class. They have also

year's or next year's programme, and a speed of twenty-one knots is anticipated.

The engines are of the two-stroke Diesel type, single acting, using orado oil as fo starting and reversing on compressed air. Pistons and valves are water cooled, the itel and air starting valves, eto, boing in the hand, while the scavenging air is fed in about half- way down the cylinder, Separate compressers are used, the high-pressure pumps being driven by a separato Diesel engine of 1,000 h.p.

This lattor engine will run at any speed between 240 r.p.io. and 40. r.p.in, and we are inclined to bolieva-though we cannot speak with certainty on the point – that the

big ongines run at about 190 r.p.m, normally, but can be slowed down to 35 rpm. The loading dimensions of the big engine will be about 56ft. overall length by 16ft. high and 316. in width,

"This means that they will be practically i invulnerable, since the highest point on the engine will be well below the water line, one of thot valuable features of the equipment. Moreover, the absence of stokers will mean a very large reduction in the ship's complement of men, or the capacity to carry & splendid reserve of gun crews. As regards cost, the figure is by no means exconsive, being about £10 per horse-power.

The absence of smoke from lio funnels will be of inestimable advantage, and at night time tho ships will be practically invisible, It is, by the way, interesting to note that the funnellass battleship will not be realised in the first of the type; faunels of about the usual height, but of mich reduced diameter, will be fitted: The exhaust will, of course, be practically invisible.'

But the saving of weight and space will prob. ably be hardly sufficient, as most people have foretold, to allow of extra guns of the 13.5 in. calibre; whatever is saved in this direction will probaby be utilised for the storage of extra fual, and it is certain that the motor battleships will be able to keep the sea for more than double the period of steam-driven ones.

This being so, it will be a matter merely of rocret, note calamity, that the first motor-driven Dreadnought will be a foreign, not a British, rasael. France, we believe wo are correst in saying, will be the first Power to hava a motor Dreadnought in commission.

Germany will be actually the first country to have one of these monster engines aflost in a warship, but her experiment, though further ad- vanced, is of no mera tentativo natura ; tha engine will be in a vessel smaller than a Dread-
