The old master rearranged the paper against the toast-rack, took a gulp of coffee, cleared his throat, and began. He was a great reader of the daily paper, which reached him through the comntry post a day late; but never in the ten years she had kept house for him had the goo lady behind the coffee pot heard him read any- thing alon! before. Truth to say, he did not do it very well; failing, for want of practice, to to the pathetic phrases their due rhythm, giro
tumbling over the simple words with an un- accustomed tongue.
From the depth of my poor broken heart" he began, and pansed there with a chicking noise in his throat.
Give me a thought in your prayers- he presently went laboriously on but the strange noise was in his throat again; he stopped and took refuge in his coffee cup,

The old master got up from his chair, turning his back on his meely cooked chop, his well- farnished breakfast table, his pleasant, obse- quions housekeeper, and stood in the window looking out into the sunshine. He saw his trim, wall-kopt lawn, with its borders of golden and warm brown wallflowers, through a mist of tears. Beyond the garden were the broad fleds he and his had tilled for generations of his careful, honest, loyal race. It was the landscape that in sunshine or shadow had been familiar to him all his life.
I have not felt like this-since my father died," he said in a shaken voice, and with somo
idea of apologising for the emotion be knew had not been hidden.
Than, going from the room, he picked up and put on his hut.
"I will keep your breakfast hot for you, sir," his flastered housekeeper called after him.
Yes, year, He woah! pro back to his chop right
on with his day's work, of enough, and
go courea But for a little he wanted to be alone to get rid of that clicking in his throat; to lot the wind and the aan dry those tears upon his sbeek he would not be seen to wipe away.
"To you and me," his housekeeper had said. She had hit the nail on the bead there. It was Just that..." To you and me.”
And that intimate, that personal note which the Queen-mother, writing from her "broken heart, had put into her message to the nation had been ever in the dead King's relations to his people, causing many and many a one to ory as the old master had put it: "I have not felt like this since my father died."
The old master passed through his garden and orozzed the sunlit road, turning his feet mechanically to the familiar ways of his fields and meadowa. The lovely green robe of May was over all. The wild cherry-trees in the hedge-row which bordered ons side of the grass- grown drift-away over which he walked had blossomed fairy-white against the sky. The
grass of the bank beneath was enamelled with the gold of the cowslip, the speedwell's darling blue. Clear and clean and distinct was every fower and tree and blade of grass, or if fresh fashioned for the May morning by the hand of God. He saw them barred and blotted through the mist of teams.
A tumbril filled with tarnips overtook him as he slowly walked, one of his labourers sitting sideways on the horse.
Crael winds for May, master" (for although the sun shone and the skies were blue, the air was cold and light clouds of dust were blown in patis from the folds).
that killed our King, hey say 'twas the winds
"If 8D," the master said, "they killed the finest, bravest gentleman they ever blaw on."
Right you are there, monster. They tall ma as he was born same year as yon.
81
Yes. We were young together," the mastor said, and the tumbril passed on.
**Together!" There it was. The personal
note again. He had loved his gun in those days,
bis
cards, to run up to a theatre now game and then, to see the best horse win in a race. All the healthy, natural pleasures of the young. They had been easier to Lim, he knew, as well na more enjoyable because the great man who was dead had healthily loved them too.
Presently he had joined his old shopherd, who, his fock going on before, was making his way into the next field, which was of rye,
· My missus bave put me inter mournin', like the rest of the folk," the shepherd said, and showed the sleeve of his dirty smook. “She'd kep' th' bit of crape, my malesus had, since our Jenny died. Yew shall wear it for th' King, Tith last we kin da for 'm, and she sewed it on my arm **
He had a gentle face sait a pale blue eye, and wore his battered hat at the back of his grey bead. He looked before him with the mild, vague glance of a man who habitually gazes over great distanous at nothing in particular, Every tree of the hedgeway he know, every dip of the hollow, every gentle rise of the land.
Th' warld fare like a strange place without 'm," the shepherd said, passing on behind his fock..
On his way back to the breakfast-table the old master encountered his kooper, a man fall of talk, and of importance just now in the place, he having once upon a time gone down to Band- ringham to see the King shoot.

A fine sportamon he were; & 2 through," he finished. And I tell you hơn.
