R. G. A. PROMOTIONS.
In connection with recent references to pro motion in the Artillery the following verses which appear in Truth, will be road with interest. A beading explains that the last promotion from Shaltarn to Captain in the "R. G. A. was dated the 6th May, 1908;—

THE SUEZ CANAL.
DOURLING THE WIDTH,
Mr. Arthur Hamilton writes as follows to
World's Work --
When Ferdinand de Loops carved his way themagh the narrow neck of sand joining the Africau to the dan continent, so that the waters of the Mediterranean commingled with those of the Red Sea and afforded a new and shorter route to the East, hs little realised that within half a century such huge strides wonić be made in shipbuilding as to threaten the utility of his great ditch. True, as yet there. are no Lusitanias or Deutschlands flying between Barope and the Orient, but every year the dimensions and tensage of craft linking the two sides of the world together are increasing in size to meet the siguented derantis of traffic. The results are that the engineers responsible for the maintenance of this narrow waterway are hard pat to it to accommodate the shipping xavouring this route.
When the esual was opened in 1869 the widths of the watorway surface was from 150 to 300 fest taporing to 72 feet in width at the bottom with an avenge depth of 26 feet. But less than a quarter of a century's operation suced to show that such dimensions were quite indequate to most advancing shipping require meats. The responsible unthorities recognised that a determined constructional contest would have to be waged against the shipbuilder to maintain an open channel suitable for all craft that might follow this highway.

Combes M. Clemencean was known in France as "the Cabinet-breaker, from the success of his criticisme, which had a powerial effoot in terminating the reign of many Cabinets. There is something remarkable in this fact, inasmuch as it almost ornotly coincides with the disappearance of Prince Elow from the theatre of public affairs.
