STORIES OF MR. TAFT.
The popularity of this company is increasing, REMINISCENCES OF AN AMERICAN “HIILE. for Saturday night's production attmoted a "An American Bailt, who has been inti.
considerably larger audience than they were favoured with on either of the two previous nights. On this occasion the order of the programme was reversed, for the first half
of the evening was devoted to vandeville items and it was after the interval that the artiste faced the foot lights in "Behind the Scenes," a zuusical akit by George Cohan, Senorita Olívia, the Filipino wire walker, in the opening act again received a good ovation and the audience wore unstinted in their applause when two tiny children from the Philip pines performed some eccentric tumbling Mise Doris M'Anley already an established favourite, followed with some clover stop dancing and was recalled to the pleasure of the audience. Miss May Wallaco the serio-comic sang a couple of catchy songe and also danced exceedingly well. The next performer met with a hearty reception and before he was allowed to rotire, Mr. Carl Wallner, the German Comedian, was compelled to give three turns which included some rather peculiar music or antiquated music on antiqusted instrumente, The Bong "What did you marry me for F" sung by the vivacious patite comedienne Miss Vera Ferrace was one of the most popular of the evening and the audience were not satisfled until the charming artist re-appeared.
mately associated with President Taft for many
years, sends to the Times an interesting letter, in widek ho gives his impressions of the popular President of the United States. He says:
The public has heard much of Mr. Taft's ofa giant and the bulk of a giant, as Bismarck physical bigness It is true he has the stature. had. But it is also trae timt he has the strength, not of a giant, siuse giants are said not to be as strong as they look, but of an athlete. He had it when he went to Yale University, and has it still, being now fifty-one,
"It was then the custom at this famous college to treat the arriving freshman a little roughly-te rag him, in short. As the innocent ruerait and the less innocent Sophomores walgod up and down the pavement in front of the collego green, the Sophomores wonki playfully elbow the freshman into the. guttor
"Mr. Taft suffered this indignity like other, He sald to the friend who was with him, wish you would walk a little behind me when we meet that fellow next. Yos, but why?
Because if he tries that again I am going to throw him over my shoulder, and I should like you to catch him. And he did; and from that time on nabody molested the Ohio freshman.
A STRONG JUDGE, DA
I resist the temptation to retell som parts of Mr. Taft's public career. But again I give you an anecdote, which goes back to the days when he was Judge of the United States Cir ouit Court Ho had granted sa injunction against some railway strikers. A motion to thissolve it was made. He dismissed that applica tion, and ended his brief judgment with a warning to the rioters that all the power of the United States would be used, if needed, to protect the railway and its servants and the

"So much has been printed before, but Mr. Justice Taft, having the ringlenders before him in court, added: "If any man disobeys the order of the Court I shall commit him to gaol. for contempt, and in gaol he will stay till he and is prepared has purged him of his contempt and to keep the peace."
Miss Eileen Murray supplied some Irish melo- dies with mach acceptance and the baritone solo "On the Road to Mandalay" (by request) and "The Fire Bridge" by Mr. Ernest Brinkman were loudly applauded. The Williams Sisters and the Chrystals contributed songs in pairs and received their mead of appreciation. After the usual intermission came the one act comedy and again the vocal artiste distinguished them palvas. Miss Vora Ferrace na the "call boy" was in a congenial part, and Miss Eileen Murray, Miss May Wallace, Miss Raby Chrystal and Miss Doris MAuley appeared to advantago in their various parts, while The Laooty Chorus was also well represented. Mr. Robart HoGrear As the inquisitive parson was very humurons and the parts of Capt. Wallace and Baron Loil ware interpreted by Mesara. Brinkmanlish blood which runs in his veins, not, as in
and Wallner.
SHABE REPORT.
"It was Mr. Taft who told me the story some three years ago, when his name was being men- tioned as a candidate for the Presidency. This,' he said, was not the only case in which I had to dead judicially with strikers. They threatened violence then. They have never forgiven me, they never will forgive me. I am an impossible candidate,"
