PAMINENIA...
A POPULAR CLERGYMAN
AN
Sciatica, Stiffness,
Nervous and Muscular Fatigue-
The remarkable public appreciation of the important letters appearing in this announcement week by week, is due to the absolute reliability of the experiances narrated. The very people we all know and feel we can trust, in whose word we have implicit confidenes, those people, the Doctors, Nurses, Clergymen, come forward and emphatically assure us of the exceptional efficacy of Phosferine. Recently it was the Matron of an Ipswich Infirmary, then followed the striking testimony of Dr. Butler, and now in to-day's letter the Vicar of a largo parish recognises the innumerable benefits which unfailingly result from a course of Phosferinė. This last correspondent, the Rev. W. Thwaites, says that he found. Phosferine to be of the greatest value in remedying and preventing Sciatica, and also particularly serviceable in dispelling nervous and muscular fatigue, and strengthening the system generally. Such, frequent assurances from Clerical and Medical sources, of the energising properties of Phosferine, not only guarantee its remedial effects, but also enable readers who select the famous nerve tonic, to anticipate certain recovery and avoid suffering, loss of time, and worry of uncertain results..
Totally disappeared.
The Rev. Wm. Thwaites, Egremont Rectory, Cumberland, writes:- "I have found from long experience that Phosferine is of the greatest value, for not only throwing off a threatened attack of Sciatica, but for enabling me to accomplish any great physical strain (like a long cycle ride) with ease and comfort. For some weeks back I have had a peculiar stiffness in my joints, arising from hard cycling I thought, but I dosed myself with Phosferine with the result that within 24 hours the pain had gone. Phosferine gives strength to the nervous and muscular system and as a rule I can feel the benefit in five hours."--July 6, 1908.

"LADY VIOLET ELLIOTT'S
TROUSSEAU.
Lady Voilet Elliott's wedding dress and trousseau left Loaden the other day, says The Times. It includes many, beautiful dresses for morning and evening wear, in addition to several plainer coate and skirts. Besides these there are teagowas, doaks, traveling wraps, a hoavy tweed out, and a very handsome mus quash cost of original male with square collar and stole of exmin bordered with beads and tails of the same for
But the wedding dress is the most interesting item of the collection. It is male of ivory Batin charmeuse, with the bodice droped in narrow set folds, fastened on the left side with quaint ornaments of pearls and silver. These folds are so arranged us to disclose a tiny square of Brussels lace, above which a transparent guimpe of tracked net, embroidered in ribbon-work, is carried to the throat to be finished by a high collar of the same not. The skirt is plain but for a series of plaits on the left side and the panel of diver embroidery inserted in the front between two narrow folds of the material. The train is of silver cloth, exquisite ly embroidered in a design of feathers, roses, and opon trallisses, worked in crystals and diamonds, and it is slung from the shoulders by two embroidered straps carried round the arma,
Lady Violet's going away dreen is of that apparent simplicity which only the cleverest dressmakers dare attempt. It is of finest ivory ninon inserted on pink silk, which just tinges the ninon with a suggestion of colour. The corsage is arranged with a dehu trimming of net and Valenciennes, while rertical insertions of Valenciennes and tucks are carried down the skirt. Narrow strappings of mauve satin developing at the book into smart little rosettes holding frjoged sash ends mark the waist, and the elbow sleeves are turned book with a antt band repeating the colour and material. Over this charming dress Lady Violet will wear a lovely cloak of blue satin charmeuse lined with apricot satin, with a collur of the latter rolled to the waigh and tied with aluminium em- broidery. The sleeves are very wide and are turned back with large cuffs fastened with soutached buttons, and similar buttons appear as ornamente on the very straight back. The going-away hat is of pink Tejal straw, trim med with pink satin ribbon and a spray of wisteria.
In Atting contrast to the white and silver worn by the bride wilt be the bridesmaids dresses, pale pink not worked in silks and silver. The bodice is drapped back and front over a transparent vest of ivory not, and the draperies are continued into the tunic, which, out short in front, is at this back carried almost to the hem of the foll chiffon unherskirt, forming as it were two pointed scarves, one of which is finished with a heavy silver tassel. Tambour embroideries in an artistic leaf design edge the draperies; and where the lifted tunic shown the underskirt the latter is worked in silver raised and padded. The same rich silver embroideries appear on the elbow sleeves, which are out open to show the white net below, and thun held together by a band of pink satin and silver. A quaint band of the same materials fastened at flie back by a large pink topaz set in an antique silver bookle finishes the waist. The bats to be worn with these dresses' aro of finest black orinaline, have one pink ostrich feather curled round the crown, and a camellia of the same colour nestling in the brixa.
OFF THE HIGH FOAD IN INDIA.
THE TIMES OF OLD,
This country was not always fields and water and crops (says a writor in the Westminster). Many years ago the river-bed was thick, with jungle, and wild beasta roamed unchecked. It was so when the English came; but now all changed, I remember when the last tiger was killed. The Englishmen had not elephants The and
was drawing the jungle. tiger turned on many beaters and one of the heaters, a Baluch of the olden time, with buckler on big breast and sword by his aide, a man who had seen many wars. "Keep back," they cried to him: "let the English man come to shoot." The warrior's blood ran hot within him. "I know no Englishmen nor rulers," he replied.
Here is but a tiger and a Baluch, and we will see which will give way first." They prang upon one another, the tiger and the man, and the Balach killed the tiger there in the jungle. He himself was terribly mauled and hart, and died a few days after. Such were the men of those days, wid the old spirit is, even now, not quite dead.. But last year & black bear came down from the hills, and they found it in their crops. The people turned out with axes and sperrs to kill it, and had surrounded it where it stood ready to fight to thedeath. Suddenly ayoung Pathan dropped his axe. "Will anyone come with me and kill the bear with his hands alone?" he cried. A dozen young men followed him, and they ran upon the bear. With teeth and claws the bear facerated and tore them, but they pulled him down and killed him with their hands. A mad feat, but it is well that the young men should show that they have not lost their fathers" spirit.
There were worse things than bears and tigers. in those days. Ghouls and witches haunted those hills, and woe to the man who fell into their power. Nowadays it is not the same, but thes the hills and ravines were full of terror, and i man must walk carefully. The ghouls were often woman, huge in size and strength, and terrible to look upon. I myself noror saw one, but I had a friend who was caught by one and who escaped, by the grace of God. The good God might rescue man who fell into their clutches, but the ghouls had no pity. He was great hanter, and had been ont shooting in the hills. There he shot a mountain sheep. He was tired, and the evening shades were falling, so he thought to cook and eat a slice before he went back with his spoil. He lighted fire and out and toasted some slices. As he sat at esso and cooked he felt a touch on his arm, and, looking round, saw it. He was a brave mau, used to danger and solitnds, yet to his last hours he shivered and shook when he described what he saw there beside him, patting his arm and looking fondly into his face. I never even saw it, but it clulls even my blood to tell you what he saw. What must it have been for him, there in the hills amid the falling shadows, alone and far from help? We know the fate of the men whom the ghouls capture, but we speak of it only in whispers. He know what lay before him, and would have welcomed ray death, if only he might escape from that shame and forror. His knife lay beside the sheep he had killed. His gan was on the other side of the fro, and beside him sat. It, with a hand on his arm and a strength more than human. What could the bravest do?, Chance favoured him-chance and the grace of God. As It leaned towards him he kicked the logs of the fire. The flames shot up and caught It's long tangled hair. She lifted her hands to her hair, and in the instant be sprang through the fire and grasped his gun and picked up his long knife. Now at least he could fight and he turned to meet the terror. She fled from hivi; hidding among the rocks and sobbing, and he saw her no more. The hunter left that dreadfal spot and the sheep that he had shot, and with Fackward glancing eyes hurried down from the hills to the plains, to the waving green fields and the fresh open air, back to his village and to his follow-men.
A very beautiful dress of palest grey cachemire de soie with embroideries in silver and gray mingled with a touch of blue has been chosen by Lady Minto to wear at the wedding. The arrangement of the skirt with its draperies held to one side of the front where it is caught by a band of the embroidery is a distinctive feature, and the corsage is very cleverly movided to the figure aave will be the colour worn by Lady Lansdowne and a cachemire de sale the material, the rich embroideries being worked in mauve and grey and silver, while at the reception on the eve of the wedding her dress will be of white charmeuse, charmingly made with a draped corsage, fastened on one. It was not only the dreadful things which shoulder by a diamond buckle and relieved by a walked the hills from which a man had to guard fold of pale blas tulle. The skirt is almost plain, in those days. Here in our villages the black dependling for its affect on its perfect cut. powers assailed us. I know a witch once myself

convicted witch She was an old woman when I know her, but she had been young and beautiful, and had communion with evil spirits ? Why shoukl they commune with evil spirits! Who can say. It is perhaps the love of power, or some devil possesses them. She was young and was married, and had children and a good husband. It began to be rumoured that she was seen in other places while she herself was at home. None but a witch can transport herself through the air from place to place. There came a man who said, "I saw that woman last week She in such a city, a hundred miles away. had not left the village, as all the people knew.
