DECLINING MANUFACTURES,

While the export of British coal for use abroad continues to increase-though there was the London Daily Telegraphs is aligning WAY slight cat-back in July-trade generally, saya from us month by month. The Board of Trade figures, which were issed last month, bring the story darn to the end of July, and thus complete seven ofthe of the year. that in this period our imports have shrunk by nearly £85,600,000, in comparison with the same by, opwards of £33,000,000, an aggregate

last your period while the exports have dropped shrinkage of £58,000.00. This is the result, despite the fast that we have sold, duty free, coal of the value of £24,516,257, or £ 719,466 more than last year.

It must be remembered that everything was in favour of the home crews they had the advantage of the best coaching obtsipable in this country, the man had been practising together for monthe, and they were roing on their own water. All the mes rowing in the British eights had been able to devots the whereas the many weeks past to getting Belgians had to attend to their business in the day and row in the evenings. Est, but not least, if the physique and rowing experience of the British and Belgian oarsmen are compared an enormous advantage rents with the English- That the Englishmen were stronger physically the Belgiass will probably be the first to admit. The pace of the Belgian eight mast therefore be attributed to their style. The differences between the British and Balgian exports have been in grain and four, tobases, In the seven months the only incrassss in styles are, however, not so great a ope tightonal-and-cole for which foreign countries imagine from a casual inspection. There are are fading increasing use other textile differences in rig, the principal ones being that materials" the Belgisus row with wider blades and use paper; in every other respect the exports of our mere (tris); msohinery, and swivel rowlooks-thie will be referred to later own producs and manufactares have been on-and there are differences in swing and falling rapidly. The details are of peculiar feather, but the main principles of good rowing interest bioaudo they indicate where we have remain the same in both syles; these principles been hit most saverely. They are as follows: can be summarised under the following von BRITISH EXPORTS IN THE SEVEN MONTHS. heads!

(1) The water. should be gripped-

d-smartly at the beginning of the stroke (2) The full weight of the body should be immediately applied. (B) The stroke should be rowed through| in one plega 4) The stroke in the water. phould be as long as possible. (3 The oar thenld be taken out of the water with a clean and rapid movement, (6) The arm should be straightened as sliders should be

a possible. (7) The rought slowly forward.

THE BRITISH TREORY.

It is only when we come to see how those principles are carried out in praction that the differences in the two styles are appareat... According to the British theory, the bodies

should swing forward as far as possible without orer-reaching with the shoulders, en that the water can be gripped well in front of the riggers; the bodies and slides during the stroke should move back simultaneously, so that at the end of the stroke the bodies are slightly beyond the perpendicular and the slides right up against the bank stops. The swing forward of the bodies between the strokes fa another featurs of- the British style which is always strongly em plaalsed. The theory of these movements is that to keep muscles have given out and that by using 791

the weight of the body in addition to the driving power of the leg muscles, the maximum amount of energy can be imparted into the stroke. This theory la borne out by Mr. Etherington Smith, who rowed "even" in the Leander Olympic eight this week, in the abapter which he son- tributed to Mr. Lehmann's book, The Complete Oariman.

Far greater general exhaustion can be Produced by the use of many musclos than by the use of a few, but the pros of the boat is better maintained. A good style of rowing does not avoid but rather aims at producing a very extreme degree of general exhaustion but it gives in turn a great and wall- sustained speed, It is for these reasons that we defend the English style of rowing against foreign methods. In the latter body-swing ingally conspicuous by ita absence, and it is claimed that the strain thrown upon the abdominal muselss is thereby avoided.

When body work is absent the propelling power la supplied almost entirely by the high muscles, and, powerful though theas are they will become fatigued sooner or later, and nothing will then be left to maintain the PRO of the boat,"

STRAIN ON THE MUGGLES.

The strain on the abdominal muscle, in the British style of rowing, referred to by Mr. Etherington Smith, is certainly a severe one, and anyone who has had any experience of rowing in the British style knows that there are 660

the muscles which get tired first. The question which is now puzzling many whether the increased fatigue neces- Ritated

by the swing is compenested for by any material increase in the pace of the hoat; in other words, does the effurt entailed in swinging the bodies tire the crew to ench an extent that, although greater pace may possibly be attained during the first three minutes, the ores will suffer for it in the later stages of the race? In the Belgian style this muscles is practically svoided. Their bodies do not swing for kids 間
