The new experimental railway eur Berit is laid in the form of su oral, with a straight double track 820 feet long and a total length of 7561 feet. Motor cars using steam, electricity and bouzine will be tried. Tests will be made with different materials for bedding, various reile, sleepers of oak, pine, beech and iron, automatic block-signals, and, in fact, everything promising to add efficiener to the Germau railways.

The transmission of photographs by telegraph reached the stage of practical resnite, and actual seeing by wira is expected to follow soon Korn reproduces photographs at a distance through the varying electrical resistane of selenium, the changing current registering the lighta and shades of successire points in pe per place on a sensitive plate at the receiving a The telosfareograph of Prof. Belin, of Nancy, transmits photographs by a different and parely mechanical mesas, no selenium being used while the telegraphoscope of the same inventor is designed to produce an image of any illum nated object or scene at any distance. It is believed that the problem of feally seeing by telegraph will be solved by making the images to appear in more rapid succession than the retina can separate them, At present the sending apparatus comprises a camera ebaaura with a lens and mirror to red set the optical image npon a row of eighty tiny selenium cells, and a collector for successively inserting these calls in circuit. The receiving station em braces a highly sensitive galvanometer with three local circuits. The principal circuit con. tažas the equilibrator and a telegraph relay, the primary circuit of a small induction coil has in turn the second part of the equilibrator, and the secondary circuit of the coil has a gap whose spark, controlled by the distribating collector, perforates a paper with very fine holes equally spaced between centers bat of size varying to correspond with points on the image. This gives a picture resembling autotypy. The equilibrator, the chief part, provides a local current of suficient intensity to register decidedly every change in the feable current from the mienium calls.

To give the greatest possible precision to our knowledge of the atomic weights of the elements, an international commission correct the list each year in accordance with the most recent discoveries. Of the 79 elements in the latest list, hydrogen is still the lightest, with an atomie | weight of 1:08. The atomic weight of ox5gaú is 16, gold, 1972, radiani, 225, and areciam, the heaviest substance, 2335, while piercury, thallium, lead, bismuth and thorium are all beavier than gold.

The compressed air spray has been used for

► 'considerable time for painting large surfaces, like the Riffel tower, and for whilewsching tunnels. The newer art of dacorating smali surfaces by means of an sir brush seems to have reached its highest development in Germany. Of the two types of apparatus, one is hold like a pencil and the other is used like a rérolver, and the air for spraying is supplied from a oylinder of compressed air or carbonic acid-gas or in a more primitive way by a hand pump. It is capable of a great variety of applications. The air-brush can be used for ordinary indus- trial painting by any unskilledt workman, white an artist of some ability can print Bowers and other designs on enamel, glass, porcelain, bronze, paper, and even upon cloth, carpits and qtber fabrics. It has proven specially service. |able in retouching photographe.

Among the substances, for which a sudden demand has sprung up is the metal cobalt, This bas been used only for such purposes as coloring glass, enamels and porcelains, and the
