THE NAVAL EXHIBITION AT EARL'S-COURT IN 1905.
A
The Times had this letter last month :- Sir. As vice-president of the Naral. Ship- ping, and Fisheries Exhibition" to be held at Earl's court next year. I hare the honour to ask you kindly to afford me the bospitality of your columus to make the aims of the committee widely known, and thus euenre the national character of the exhibition.
In the committee's circular it is remarked that 2 years will have elapsed since the Fisheries Exhibition of 1883 and 14 years since the Naval Exhibition of 1991,7 and they proceed to oxplain their views as follows-
Recent events have attracted public attention, in a marked mauer to maritime questious. The naval requirements of the country, the necessity for an adequate supply of duly qualified seamen, the general welfare of our sailors, the prosperity of our mercantile marine, the preservation and development of our fisheries, are all matters of great and absorbing public interest. It is thought, therefore, that in making the exhibition arrangements for 1905 national interest and public sympathy would assign a foremost place. to then subjects, more especí-lly as we celebrate in
that the
year centenary of Nelson's glorious victory at
at Trafaleer.
I remmin your obedient servant,
E. R. FREMANTLE, Admiral

FAR EASTERN JOURNALISM.
The Peking Times notices that one of the innovations of the Standard under its new auspices has been a departure from that time- bored anonymity which is considered the backbone of British journalism. Every journa list in the Far East, our contemporary then goes on to say, knows to the full how handicap. pod ho is by the blaze of publicity in which he works, and how familiarity with the writer all In the case of a small circle who understand 100 frequently means contempt for the writing. the ins and outs of journalistic difficulties, the industry. versatility, and realiness of the colonial editer meets with duy appreciation, zax the knowledge that the daily articles are the ploding work of one hand and brain suffico to win the respect of those who stop to think what hardes grind abroad than in London, where the running aily paper really means; a much labour is properly divisioned and understa ties always available. Correspondents of the big known to the world in course of time, especially London dailies stationed abroad perferes becom if their work is of high order, but it is ques tionable whether excessive publicity assists them much, and it has always bean hold that the secrecy home journalism is a vu nable aid to Prestige.

May I ask those who have interesting relics of our naval hernes, portraits pictures, and other mementos suitable, to communicate with Sir Arthur Trendell, the lion, secretary of the loan section at the Earl's-court offlies, where every information will be given them as to security, insurance, &c., all exponses boing paid by the company?
