Weather forecasters in the British Isles have worked at disad gantago. The disturbances largely appronciled from the west and south-west, and in those directions the Atlantic has kept the obsersing stations too far away for effective reports. The aid of wireless telography is now being invoked. Eforts of the Motorological Council to make arrangements with Lloyd'e have failed, but private enterprise hus now

stepped in, and the approach of fature storms is to be signalled from ships crossing the ocean. It is expected that in winter, when the western coasts of Europa are often swept by severe gales, the warninge will be of great

value.

The Japanese excel in the making of paper from the bark of trees and shrubs. Among the remarkable variatios, D. G. Fairchild mentions the thin rain-proof paper used instead of glass for windows, the oiled papers serving for cover- ings and clothing; and the viled tissue for wrapping delicate articles. The bark papor employed for meal and grain sacks is not readily penetrated by weevils and other insecta. Most interesting of all, perhaps, zie the leather papers from which tobacco pouches and pipe casos are made, t'ress papers boing almost as tough as

the medicines ust. This is remedied by Prof. Jacob, of Berlin, by direct injection into t lungs. He had previously been successful with a similar treatment of brain and spinal diseases, but did not experim unt upon human tabareulozis until animals had been found to bear the treat - ment satisfactorily. The larynx and windpipe being first made inrousible by oocaine, a small į rubber tube is introduced through this moath, directly into the lungs. With a small syringe the medicament is thon blown into the lunga. the whole operation requiring ten, minutes aul being wall borne by the patient. In this way basilli in the lungs ware completely destroyal in four to eight weeks.

Investigation of the poison of bees has shown M. Phisalis three distinct active principles, one of which produces infamation and the second causes convulsions, while the third- stupefies. The poison is secreted by two glands, matory substances, and the alkaline on the the acid one yielding the stupefying and inflam-

sa stance, causing convulsions. The obser- vations included the poisoning of a sparrow by the stings of two or three bess. The bird showed weakening within five minutes, tien progressive increase of the partial paralysis, which at last became a more trembling inter- rupted by periods of somnolence. Death caus in two or three hours.

A recent statement that the present ivory consumption represents the annual slanghter af 20,000 elephants is denied. At least 85 pr seat, of the marketed ivory comes from the cemeteries to which the elephants have long

By substituting lines of small ball-bearings for the ordinary groovings of rifle barrels, an Englishman claims to increase by forty per cent. the average velocity, panetration and range of the projectile.

The application of vibrations to the treatment of nervous disordore has been receiving con - siderable attention. The new apparatus of W. F. Bleeker, an American teacher of chemistry, is called the radio-vibrator and it is externally a nickel-plated metal box about four inches long, three inches wide, and one inch deep. Two wires about four feet long extend from one ond. Small circular dises are attached to the wires, and when these are placed on the affected parts of the body, chemical action in the box sets up

vibrations that are claimed to be potent in restoring health to the nervous system,
