IMPERIAL QUARTO
ENGLISH
AND CHINASE DICTIONARY. WITH THE PUNTI AND MANDARIN
·PRONUNCIATION.
For comprehensiveness and practical service this Work standa anrivalled. All the now words which the Chinese have of late years been com pelled to cein to express the numerous objects i machinery, photography, telegraphy, and in science generally, which the rapid advance of foreign relations has imposed upon them, are here given in extenso. Each and every word is fully illustrated and explained, forming exercises for students of a most instructive nature. Both the Court and Pauti pronunciations are givon, the accents being carefully marked on the best principle hitherto attained. The typography displays the success of an attempt to make the Chinese and English type correspond in the size of bady thereby affecting a vast economy of space, achieving a clearness not previously attained, and dispensing with those vest margins and racant spaces which have heretofore charaċ- terized Chinese publicatione.
To illustrate the vast scope of the work the following facts are submitteltor eonsideration- Chalmers Vocabulary containe about 16,000 Chinese characters, and Medhurst's English and Chinese Dictionary about 100.000 whilst this work contains more than 50,000 English words and upwards of G00,000. Chinese character Again, despite all the grammare and other elementary works as yet published, the student of this difficult language absolutely requires ex- amples to display the various applications and equivalents of different words which have one general meaning. Of these examples this work contains more than five times as many as any other Dictionary hitherto published.
For practical purposes the arrangement of the work is so complete that a reference to its pag-s enables a person who understands English to communicate ofectively with natives who under- stand nothing but Chinese. In this respect the work will be found indispensable to all Europeane residing in China, and to the natives themselves it explains subjcets fully with which very few indeed of them are perfectly acquainted. To parties resident in England and interested in | Chins it cannot but be invaluable occasionally.
It comprises upwards of two thousand targe buarto pages.

AN APPEAL.
CONVENT AL Macao will be very thankful THE SISTERS who direct Sr. ANTONIO'S
to Shop-keepers, Linen-drapers, Clothiers and Tailors in Hongkong, Macao, and elsewhere who will send to them remuants of material, books of patterns no longer used, and any piecas of cloth, no matter how small, of which they can- not make use.
Those who sand will thus, at no cost to themselves, afford the numerous hands in the convent, especially the little ones, opportunity for useful occupation; för pieces of cloth, evon of a square inch, can be stitched together and very pretty pieces of work made out of cloth that would otherwise be thrown away. Thers articles are bought by charitable persons, and the Sisters are thus helped to keep up their very large establishment, which is maintained by the zime of friends and in a great measure by the earnings of the girls themselves, who lend by no means an idle life within the convent walls.
