removal work at the Canton River Barriers will shortly commence, and that, with a view to avoid endangering the lives of those engaged on it, the following rules should be observed by passing vessele.

Victroy Shum, who was reported to return to Canton before the Chinese Mid-autumn festivul. has received a despatch from the Peking Government to stay in Kwangsi till order has beou restored in every part of the province. Consequently His Excellency has sent to Canton for winter clothes.

Letters have been repeatedly received the last few days from the magistrates of the districts of Kwang Ling, Sz Wei, Hoi Kin and Fing Chuen in Kwaugsi by the Cunton Government, aeking for reinforcements and saying that the rebels, nawbering about three thousand, most of whom belong to the Triad Society, are now on their way to the said districts from the district of Wai-Chop, where they love ransacked most of the villages, and whore every line of business is at a standstill, and the merekants and well-to-do citizens have removed to other districts for mfety. He also expressed himself strongly on the absolute oleanliness of our whole establishment, which he assured us was equal to any ho had yet visited and superior to a great many.
