THE

AMERICAN VERSION OF · "HAMLET."

This is how an American paper renders the iragic story of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, previously narrated in another form by William bhakespeare,

EISINORE, Zealand, September 10, 1577. One of the most startling tragedies recorded in history has just besa unearthed in the most exclusive social circles. in Copenhagen. Wer it not for the dead bodies of a king, a queen and a prince that are now lying on cold stone slabs in the city morgue one would scarcely believe one's eyes and ears. The story deals with the infide lity of a woman, a murdered king, a ruined girl. and a prince of the real gone mal to death through an over-worked nervous disposition.

As reators of the Timce may remember, the King of the Danes was found dead some months ago in his orchard. The quiet tip was given out by the family physician that he has been bitten by a rattler, but it is now known that his brather, who long had designs on the Danish throne, filled him full of embalming fluid.

MON WAS ANGRY,

At any rate, when Prince Hamlet, son of the doud king, returned from his sophomore couree at Wittenberg, his suspicious bu came aroused, and, naturally enough, he grow when he thonght of the anderhanded double-dealing of his uncle. To make matters worse, the quoan. his mother, married her

sore

soul's brother and formally made him King

of the Danes.

It was bad enough for a nian of Hamlet's disposition to be compelled to quit school, to say nothing of losing his father, but when he saw the throne that was his by right of heritage given to another, he made up his mind then and there that he would avenge the wrong if. he had to resort to a bare bodkin and write Danish history on pages of blood.

PRINCE WENT MAD

This tragedy might have happened months before but for an unfortunate. nccident. It Keems that during his freshman year at Wittenborg he had received an injury in the board during a football game with Heidelberg, and this, together with the mental strain under which he laboured, nuhalanced his mind. As a teatter of fact, ked ho been slee but place he would have been sent to an asylum almost from the beginning

|

Hamlet, it seems, was pretty lively with his dukes, and in less time it takes to tell it. he land Luertes very much to the hors du combat. NO ONE SAW THE END.

What happened from then on is not known, as there were no eye-witnesses, your correspon dont being unavoidably detained. At any rate, it seems that Ophelia, in trying to make her getaway, slipped on the drawbridge and foll into the water (exit Opholia) the queen mis

tiny saits took a bottle of carbolic acid for smelling (exit queen-Humlet disarranged the interior department of the king (exit king) and then the prince, in a frenzied effort to follow his victims into the nether world, drank poison and was found lying among the bric-a-brac on the floor when your correspondent broke through the door and reached the scene of action.

While an effort was made to keep the affair as quiet as possible, the facts got ont-as fuela will-and Copenhagen has not been stirred to such depths in many a day. The people here are profty mach divided over the matter, some claiming Hamlet should have behaved himself and others that he should have soaked it to the king and allowed the rest to have gone in peace. At any rate, the Evening War Cry summed

the general feeling when it said to night :

p

In view of the disgraceful proceedings at the castle this morning it would seem that no mas has a right to monkey with another man's throne.“

It is a well-known and scientific fact that a madman at times is more cnaning than a Tas Pinkerton detective, and that, no doubt, accounta for Hamlet's ability to skilfully pull the wool over the pseudo-king's eyes. He repeatedly laid traps for the disreputable uncle who occupied

WESTERN ASSURANCE COMPANY OF the Danish throne, und whenever he caught him

napping he confided to his college chuma, Horatio, that the whole scheme had been planned by the ghost of his father, and as both boys belonged to the same Greek letter fraternity Horatio didn't dare to give him away.

WOMAN IN IT.

As a matter of strict fact and confidence, a Times reporter was told this morning that Hamlet had an excellent chance of making good his brain-craze schemes but for his some what amorous attentions to Ophelis, daughter of Polonins, private secretary to the king.

As

general thing, Hamlet was a gentleman, but one day after his brain had turned he rushed into Ophelia's private apartments in the castle, with bis outing suit somewhat disarranged, and he said things to her that were both unseemly and unkind. Womanliko, Ophelia gare the deal away. That put the king wise, of course, and froth then on there was nothing doing for

Hamlet.

One day when his mother sought to reason. 2160wt him he grow as sore as a dog, and when Polonius batted in the princa draw his rapier and it was mo feet first with three on a side" for Polonins. A murder is a pretty masty thing even in select circles of society, consequently the king experienced great dificulty in getting the news suppressed in the evening papers, and the upshot of it all was that he decided to railroad Hamlet ont of Denmark,

PRINCE PLAYED FOXY.

It was here the prince played foxy with the king, and when Hamlet showed up for break- fast the next morning it marked the boginning of the end. The whole disgraceful proceeding took place in the open court immediately after the morning meal had been placed where it would do the most good.

It seems that Laertes, son of Polonius, over since Hamlet killed his father, had been rather sore at the prince, and he proceeded to start something in his immediate vicinity that he F78 ultimately found himself unable to finish.

Effervescent

Salt-

Has No Equal

The Victory of Saline Manufacture The Twentieth Century Medicine. *THE 'SALT OF SALTS."

A POPULAR PHRASE NOW FREQUENTLY USED. "The 'Salt' of Salts" meaus the basf, the perfect, the ideal!

The phrase has been given to Lord Nelson, the greatest Admiral of England of his time- and who will dispute his title to it?

In the World of Medicine, the phrase is appropriately applied to Abboy's Effervescent Salt, and indeed it is "The Salt' of Salts" among the Salines.

The right of Abbay's Salt to this title is recognised by the Medical Profession the world orar, because it is the intelligent result of years of experience and improvement in the manufac- ture of salines; it is undeniably the most perfect effervesosat saliné in existence Physicians prescribe it and pronounce it an absolutely perfect preparation, and its use is endorsed by Medical Journals.

Abbey's Salt regulates the action of the Stomach, Livor and Bowels, it corrects all disorders arising from an unhealthy condition of these organs, by restoring them to their normal functious. Anyone suffering from Indigestion, Dyspepsia, Constipativo, Headache, Biliousness, and Lindred ailments, which are due primarily to a disordered stomach, who will use Abboy's Salt for short time, in place of some drastic, griping, unpleasant tasting Aparient which he may have been in the habit of being, will readily see from the prompt and efficacious result that Abbey's Salt is justly entitled to be called "The Salt' of Salts" in the World of Medicine,

Proof is in the psa; try it.
