PARIS POSTSCRIPT.
PARIS, 10th June,
The hay fever epidemic now raging in this metropolis shows as yet no signs of abating. The annoying malady buffles the French medical profession, and as Parisians are anything bat familiar with it, there is nothing to be done except to grin and hear it, as the saying is. The only redeeming featurs about the fire des foins LD.thut boing the name given to the affection by Parisian-is that it is more vexatious than zorious. Skilled physicinna adınil their inability to effect, a cure: the epidemic of the hour usually seizes one in the early days of June; exposure UPRIGHT IRON to the sun, a draught, heavy perspiration, such are efficient to bring on a fit of sneez. ing, which soon becomes incessant. Huy fever is nothing else, and can well be compared to influenza in point of prevsilence. The meczing may continue for six works or even two months, during which time one's handkerchief is never out of the hand Though a now and disagree able complaint, it is happily not a grave one. There is no cure for it. One doctor states that a patient of his has had hay fever regularly at thm and of each spring since "quarter of a century, the ferer never failing to seize her, as moon as she goes into the sun. should clear the ground of the vacated pavilions. The State refused to do so on the plea that it was the duty of the city authorities to pat the site in apple-pic order; at this the City Fathers became most indignaat, and replied that the whole of the expenses of such removal should be borne by the Government and nobody else. A compromise was finally arrived at. which brought about the present spectacle-quits n-paradise of this corner of the city. Artistic gardening comesasnatural to the French as cook- ing and dancing; nowhere is the truth of this remark more clearly visible than wherethe Paris Exhibition of 1990 stood, like Solomon in all its glory. The unsightly reminders of the once great show cartainly did not add to the embellishment of the City of Light. Satisfac- tion is general since the debris have been cleared away, and the longstanding wrangis brought to a close.
That Santos-Dumont is as great nu ital of Parisians of the fair sex in particular-us over, was confirmed by the enthusiasm that attended is departure from Paris for the St. Louis Exhibition, where he has gone to compete for the great prize with his latest airship, No. 7. Many of his admiters had missed the young Brazilian, and his period of comparative silence had become the subject of general discussion. When last week once more he emerged from his shed, and indulged in various trials round his ground at Neuilly, with his "No. 7," he received quite au ovation. The fact is, he had been working almost day and night, applying the finishing touches to bis latest invention, destin-

Coal will prove slightly dearer during the currency of the present financial year, and the labour charges continue, in every direction, on a very heavy scale.
INTERIM DIVIDEND.-Tho not effect of the half-year's work shows, however, on the whole, a fair result, and the Directors have declureil the usual interim dividend on the Preferred Stock, at the rate of 5 per cent, per annum, and on the Deferred Stock at the rate of 7 por cent. par annum, payable on and after the 1st June.-- By order of the Board of Directors, Ġ. But the impossibility. of arranging the future conditions of the Colonial portion of the service with the Australia Commonwealth rendered a tentative arrangement meessary in the judgment of the Port & ice, and to this decision the Directors loyally subscribed by offering the most advan- Lageous service within the Company's power.
SUMMARY.-The return
of troops from South Africa practically ended the Transport Servies, which had been continued for three years during the war in that country, and the Company's receipts show in that respect a considerable decline during the past. half-year, compared with the figures in the corresponding period of 1902-03.
The return of a number of vessels to their normal employment has, however, been the ings to a considerable extent, notwithstand ing means of improving the general freight earn.
the continuance of very low carrying rates,
The Passenger receipts contrast unfavourably with the figures of last year, which is partly due to the fact that the comparison is made with a period which embracel the traffic arising from the Indian Durlar, and partly to the effect of a lower tarif (inter alia the removal of the coal surtax) and the extension of the Company's return tickeź system, of which the public have largely availed themselves.
