CHINASE

AND DICTIONARY. WITH THE PUNTI AND MANDARIN PRONUNCIATION:

For comprehensiveness and practical service this Work stands nurivalled. All the new words which the Chinese have of late years buen com. pelled to coin to express the numerous objects ir machinery, photography, telogmply, and in science generally, which the rapid advance of foreign relations has imposed upon them, are hore given in extenso. Each and every word in fully illustrated and explained, forming erereises for students of a most instructive naturo. Both the Court and Panti pronunciations are given, the recents being carefully marked on the best principle hitherto attained. The typography displays the success of an attempt to make the Chinese and English type correspond in the size of body, thereby effooting a vast economy of space, achieving a clearness not previously attained, and dispensing with those vast margina and vacant spaces which have heretofore churae. torized Chinese publications,

To illustrate the vast scope of the work the

following facts are submitted for consideration: Chalmers Vocabulary contains about 16,000 Chinese characters, anil Medhurst's English and Chinese Dictionary about 100.000 whilst this work contains more than 50,000 English words and upwards of 000,000, Chinese characters Again, despite all too grammare and other' elementary works as yet jablished, the student of this difficult language absolutely requires ex- amples to display the various applications and equivalents of different words which have one general menning. Of these examples this work contains more than five times as many as any other Dictionary hitherto published.

For practical purposes the arrangement of the work is so complete that a reference to its pages enables a person who understands English to communicate effectively with natives who under- stand nothing but Chinese. In this respect the work will be found indispensable to all Europeans residing in China, and to the natives themselves it explains subjects fully with which very few

THE DAILY PRESS OF HONGKONG ON THE UP-TO-DATE SHORTHAND.

TN view of the correspondence which has the error surous systems of shorthand writing, it is not without interest to sae in what sort of headquarters the exponents. of the "Up-to-date" system are guartered in Hongkong. A visit to Mr. Warrick Peele's Studio in Queen's Road Central will repay the trouble. The premises are large and airy, the more-or-less noisy type-writing and the short- hand studios being wall apart. Tables are covored with green baize cloth, not at all trying to the eyes. Mr. Peele bas invented clover, though rather curious-looking double chairs, especially adapted for uns when imparting shorthand instruction. At present he is train ing a staff of teachers, three of whom are ladies, When these are thoroughly versed in the res peotive branches of teaching for which they are intended, Mr. Foele says that he will open branches at Canton, Shanghai, and Yokohama. At present his teachers have only been under training for a fortnight, whilst six weeks aito gother will be nocassy, One, a lady after & days study, accomplisued 40 words a minuto, after 11 days, 60 words; after 21 days, 80 words and she is now in the 120, words a minute speed- lesson. It is claimed that" Up-to-date" short- hand is easy to transcribe. There are to lines,. arbitrary signs, grammalogues, or obtuso anglse nor auy halving principle. The full course consists of 21 lessons. Type-writing is taught by the blind touch system, now machines of the best make being supplied for practice. Othar subjects include book-keeping, arithmetic, lan guoges, memory-training, and business deport- ment.
