A BRUTAL PRIZE FIGHT.
The fight in San Francisco between Young Carbstt and Eddie Haalon for the featherweight championship at the world resulted in the I carried it to the binnacle and examined it vistory of Corbett, the holder, in the sixteen by the light of the lamps there. Without doubt it was a luggage label and torn half across from right to left. The sort of Inbel that one sticks on the top of trunks when travelling. The reverse side had been gummed, but this had mostly disappeared. The name written upon the paper had disappeared, and all that remained was the single word Esq. and below "ger to Londos "below that again "on All this was as plain as noosday. The man, whoover he might have been, was a pas. senger to England, and the particular item of luggage to which this label ad ise attached was wanted on the voyage. She did not appear to hear ino, and when I looked more closely at her I discovered that her eyes were closed as if she were asleep. But, good gracious, man," I cried at last, "if it came off his luggage, where is his luggage now? Answer me that! I beliore, we'll come near getting to besiness.”*

"It's a fair corker." he observed emphatically. "I never knew another like it."-
"Well,"
I said, "I think I've worried enough over it to-night. I shell go below and Ben if I can dream of it. So far as I can tell it's about all we can do."
Having given him the course I accordingly went down to the cuddy and a glass of grog, and then made my way to my cabin. Tea minutes later I was in hed and fast asleep, destined not to wake till the steward came to call me at seven o'clock.
Next day, and greatly to my disappointment, I found that Miss Alexandra had relapsed inte hor former somi-comatose condition. She seemed unconscious of anything that went on around her, and when I persuaded her to accompany me on deck and found a comfortable place for her alongside the companion, she sat there, looking straight before her with lack-lustre eyes-as if she had no sort of idea where she was. It was a pitiable thing to witness. Pour girl! I felt indeed sorry for hor, but alas! I could do nothing to help her.
What was the mystery that susthrouded this ship? What was the reason of the crime that board bar ? had undoubtedly been committed If it had been matiay why had they beant such pa ias to leave the ship so spick and spaz-for as rule mutineers-having disposed of their oflcers do not turn to and alean up before taking their departure. On the contrary they bolt like rats unless their object is to seize the Then again, who was the man whom we had discovered so brutally murdered and pinned to the deck? He did not look like a ses-faring mau-though for that matter I have known many skippers who might well have passed for clergy meu, doctors or lawyers. If, however, ho had best the skipper, what had became of the mates ? Possibly, I argued, they might have been murdered too and their bodies throwa overboard--or, on the other hand, they might have east in their let with the mutineers and This train of have left the ship with them. thought brought me to the most puzzling of all If they, the matines 8, had obtained possession of the resset, as the undoubtedly had done, why did they leave her in mid-ocean. They could not hope to wake the land, and no other reasel would tak them off a ship like this with- out enquiry. It was not as if she were nasound in any way on the contrary she was as trita craft as the heart of a mariner could desire. The whole thing was entirely inexplicable and I couldnt make heed er teic of it-try how I wonid. I devoted three pipes to the considera-svitable fate tion of it, and then came to the conclusion that it was beyond me, and that it would be botter to leave it alone and to trust to Time to solve [419 the mystery for me. This did not prevent me, however, from speaking to Jackson on the sub ject when he caine on deck at sight balls (mid. night) to relieve ma.

961 At this juncture I found myself co-fronted with a serious problem. When we reached England, what was I going to do with her? The owners of the "Huliket" would ant of IF YOU HAVE ACQUIRED A TASTE FOR course be willing to provide for ber; we could not discover the name of the ship (I had tried to do so by every means in my power-but in vain.
