was the question of what was to be the future of the great Fort of London. He regretted to say that in their experioncs London was at the present time not holding its own in regard to the whole of the Eastern trade; and it appeared to bin that ногте competent Session of Parliament in order to control MOST MODERNLY EQUIPPED HOSTELRY IN MANILA, P.I authority should be instituted in the nort
the great business of this place. The Com- pany's recripts from passenger traffle daring the past year amounted to 1,167,309, showing a decline of £51,000, but this loss had been clearly explained in the report as being das to the retaoral of the eurtax which was posed at the time when coal. was excessively dear, and als to other modifications which the Company had made in their tariff for the public advan- tage. He himself anticipated a farther sacrifice of revenue in this direction unless they were compensated during text year by an increase of traffic. There was another considerable diffi galty they had to meet next year. Russia had recently completed her great railway to Siberia, and this madu transit pessible from London, a Russian-Biberia, to ports in China in a very touch shorter time than could possibly be accom- plished by steam. The Directors had accor- dingly decided to reduos the Company's passen. gar fares to China very considerably from Jan- uary 1st next. It was not impossible that the working of the Biberian Railway system might prove eventually to be not a disadvan tage but an advantage to the Company. He then alluded with satisfaction to their new ships of the Moldavia typ, and statel that the Com- pany's vessols had been doubled in size in the last 20 years.
