The gront importance of completing the magnetic survey of the globe was urged by Capt. E. W. Creak in his address as Vice-Presi dent of the British Association. When Gilbert, in 1600, discovered the earth to be a great magnet, he supposed it to be's stable one, and it was not until 34 years later that the varying magnetic declination near London proved the contrary. Observations of the changes are still lacking for a great portion of the globe away from the consts, while still less has been done on the two-thirds covered by water, Just at pressat the expeditions in the Antarctic regions are co-operating, and it is hoped that the exact location of the South Magnetic Polo may soon be made known. The magnetic records show curions anomalies, Somotimerno shaugi eccure in the magnotio declination in one locality, while in another there will be a sudden ons and some places exhibit vary remarkable local disturbances. "Magnetic shoals" have been found beneath the sea. Terrestrial magnetismound of a sweet-toned silvor bell, is still an unfathomed mystery, and the ordinary traveller
may aid much the work of shedding light on it..

Association paper, las been able to calculate the arorage of the moromonts for different parts of the globe, not only at the surface but at the greatest heights. Ono of his most important conclusions in that the hitherto assumed vertical circulation between the Foles and the Tropics hrs no existence. He finds that above the thermic equator and the the erst the equatorial calms a'current from persists throughout the year. Above
the trades, au anti-trade prevails from south-west in the Northern Hemisphere and from the north-west in the Sonthera; this anti- trade does not pass the Polar limit of the trade, but deviates more and more to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern, so as to become a current from the west over the crest of the barometrie maximum of the Tropics, where it descends to increase the trade. The cagions at the equatorial limit of the trade join sometimes that of the trade sometimes that of the equatorial calma, secord. ing to the season. Troublesome pests of the lawn are the com mon dandelion (Taraxacum oficinale) and the fall dandelion (Leontodon autumnale). Owners of lowns and parks permit the spring cutting of dandelions for "greena," but Prof. W. M. cut off is quickly replaced by one to six new CTOWER. For keeping out the pests thick Bow- ing with three to five bushels of carefully cleaned grass seed per acre is recommended with thorough digging out of scattering dan delions, and new reading or sodding when these planta become numerous..
