He had, already, with a fine assumption of indignation, repudiated the charge brought against him, though, all the same, he felt perfectly sure that it would rein him. Mr. Morrison was the younger member who

hud seized Lambert's hands at the moment the accusation was made against him.

The elder of his two accusers left the club shortly after those who had called forth the above expressions from Lambert, and, while he waited for the cab which the porter hailed, his eyes. rested on the pan whom, in common with Morrison, he had denounced. But they, too, like the eyes of the others, were vacant. Thero was no recognition of bim in them. Then, à quarter of an hour ister, Mr. Morrison catné down the club stops and walked rapidly away,

"stop a minute it you please," Lambert said, hastening after him and catshing him up directly he had passed the front of the club.

I have a verd to my to you."

Mr. Morrison, who was a well-built young man, stopped and swung round at enca on boing suddenly sädressed by Lambert, whom he, too, had seen as be left the elab; then he said contemptuously: "Bat I baro nothing to say to you- until we neat before the Committee."

"You are a low cad," Lambert said, to bring such a charge against a gentleman as you did to-night."

"A gentleman!" Mr. Morrison re-echoed with further contempt, accompanied by a sneer- ing laugh. ***A gentleman!' Well! you may be one and I way be a low cad, But I'm not a cord-sharper at any rate."

In an instant Lambert hed struck out with his fist-porhaps without having originally in- tended to do so--while using a horrible oath, and had hit the other in the face; but the blow was quickly returned, and, as moment later, regular affray was taking place between them. Then, another moment later, Lambert, whe was decidedly getting the worst of the encoun. ter, found himself dragged violently backwards

renuity and foresight, they had been written as a different form of suggestion, as a hint that if the day should ever come when she might have much and he nothing, he had claims upon her which no evil deiagio stigma, no disgrace-could ever deprive him of,

Bat now-now!-when the man was at the

lowest depths of degradation and despair, when his club had cast him forth as anworthy of it. when the Service he had diagraced was about to do the ame thing, she was all his, all for him, Come what may, coine what will," she said with streaming eyes on the day they first met again at a village half way betwann Aldershot aud Londen, “I am always your wife. Your fond loving wife. Ons who believes in your honour and innocence. You say you are going to leave England next week, that it is no longer a home, a country for you. Take me with you, Let your home, however wretched, be mine. Let me be your wife and companion, your holp mate: not your wife i nam only. If you wish it, I will tell my father to-night that I am

your wife; to-morrow I will join you and

never quit your side while we are both alive."

Whatovor the man's faults woro, and God knows they were had enough, he was still

either so bad nor so selfish as to consent this.

He was not so cruel as to take her away from a home which, if it was not luxarious and sometimes scarcely comfortable, was at least a home, a shelter for hør.

IMPERIAL QUARTO ENGLISH AND CHINASE

DICTIONARY. WITH THE PUNTI AND MANDARIN PRONUNCIATION,

For comprehensiveness and practical service this Work stands unrivalled. All the new words which the Chinese hare of late years been com pelled to coin to express the numerous objects it machinery, photography, telegraphy, and in science generally, which the rapid advance of foreign relations has imposed upon them, are here given in extenso. Euch and every word is fully illustrated and explained, forming exercises for students of a most instructive nature. Both the Court and Panti promociations are given, the accents being carefully marked on the bout principle hitherto attained. The typography Chinese and English typs correspond in the size displays the success of an attempt to make the of body, thereby effecting a vast economy of space, achieving a clearness not previously attained, and dispensing with those vaxt margins and vacant spaces which have heretofore charac terized Chinese publications,

To illustrate the vast scope of the work the following facts are submitted for consularation -- Chalmers Vocabulary contains about 16,000 Chinese characters, and Medhurst's English and Chinese Dictionary about 100.000 whilst this work contains more than 50,000 English words and upwards of 600,000, Chinese charzoters Again, dospite- all the grammars and other elementary works as yet published, the student of this dileult language absolutely requirem ex- amples to display the various applications and equivalents of different words which have one general meaning. Of these examples this work contains more than five times as many as any other Dictionary hitherto published.

For practical purposes the arrangement of the work is so complete that a reference to its pagez enables a person who understands English to communicate effectively with natives who under- stand nothing int Chinese. In this respect the work will be found indisponeable to all Europeans residing in Chins, and to the natives themselves it explains subjects fally with which very few indeed of them are perfectly acquainted. To partics resident in England and interested in China it cannot but be invaluable occasionally.

It comprises upwards of two thousand large quarto pages.
