Nanning, 29th June,

Dear Mr. Stewart-In company with Rev. Norman Mackenzie I left Kwai Un on Jane 9th en route for Nanning. We sailed on house boat-belonging to the French Consut of Langchao, kindly lont to us for the purpose. The rice amounting to 241,068 esttios was carried in soven cargo-boats. It had been our expectation before coming to Kwai Un to load rice in 10,000-catty boats, hat the necessary number of vassola for this purpose was not available. I may also that the special trackers, promised (I understood) to Mr. Clomenti, were not provided at any point throughout the whole route, zeither had Mr. Fletcher heard anything of this matter. They expressed themselves as quite clear on three details over which I feared there might be misunderstand g, viz. :-(i) The rice was for free distribution only, net for cheap salt. The Uu informed me that the Tuotai was very pleased I had come to distribute rice and wished to oxtend his sincere thanks to the Hongkong Committee for their generons contribution of rice. The Wai Un seemed to be well informed of the state of affairs here, and told me that had it not been for the promise of rico modo by Mr. Clamenti the distribution of grnal would have ceased at the end of the fourth Chinese month, but in consequens of that promise the Kwangsi Shon Tong had continued to give, daring the fifth months and the Kwangtung Shin Tong was now distributing for this, the intercalary fish month. The people were in expectation of this "English" rice and would be disappoluted if they did not now ruiva it. Ten days be thought would be sufficiently long for distribution in the city itself.
