You must know that if there there is one thing I care for more than for myself, it is for the Mugwamp, a nine and a half ten cutter, as smart and ship-shape as you would wish to see. Well, in September-worse luck!I agreed to go to the Obas Gathering. It wasn't for my own sake because I'm not much of a dancing wan, and rather avoid things of that sort as a rule; but I had young Fitzgerald with me. His first dross suit was still is only one, and the boy was as fond of a ball as any school-girl could be. He had really been very good washing up the dishes ou board the Magicamp (I always cooked the dinner myself that was important), and obeying orders, and when he fixed me with his big. child-like eyes, sud spoke yearningly of the Gathering, 1, like a fool, maid lazily. "How would it do to make a run to Oban for it After that there was no getting out of it with pence or honour. He wired for his dress clothes he wired for four pairs of white gloves--nuid bless my soul if the boy didn't wire to Covent Garden for a buttonhole.
"I suppose you won't be able to dress on board I naked, sarcastically, we'd better wire to the hotel, and book a room with a figure glass,"
one at a tojma,
Oh, sure, but we'll manage all roight here," replied
young Fitzgerald, though, he stipulated.
Then we'll dress first, Douglas," suggested Henderson, with forethought.
There were only the three of us on bard- Henderson, a dour chap, just returned from India, and a perfect tailor at handling a rope- but an old friend, young Fitzgerald, whoni wa called The Infaut, a gheory Irisli boy, with a brogue you could eat with a knife, end myself. They had both come for a week's cruising; but, as I say, the youthful and Celtic lave forgniety evinced by young Fitzgerald extended onr plans.
We best down the Sound of Mull against a food tide. and with head winds that nearly drors The Infant frantic. We had the ignominy of seeing the steamer, falgar but offensively superior to the, considerations of eind and tide, pass us ou her way, as we flapped and tossed helplessly.
"My kilts are safe to arrive anyway." I said to The Infunt, consolingly. They're on board hor."
It didn't choor The Infant at all; he merely sucked his first finger and held it up auriously, and then uwore softly.
Thare a dirty trick," growled Henderson. Fitzgerald sworo again, louder.

It was a pretty sight, and a cheery one. was dark as sin, but the shure line of the bay was marked out and ringed round with hundreds of lights, and there was a perfect pack of yachts in, with their lighta bobbing. From shore came the skerling of many bagpipes, far and near. and there was a general sensation of stir and excitement. The little town was making real y for to-morrow's doings.
As we let go we were bailed by a yacht alongside.
"Mug-wump!"
I shouted in reply.

"Tell him it's the Cinderella."
Oh, it's my cousins, the Frasers," said Hen- derson, at my elbow.

He was right, we felt; but what was to be done? There wasn't much room for clothes on board, and we had pretty well exhausted our stock. Beautiful raiment awaited us on shore; bat we felt ruefully that a change apices in the hard was worth a wardrobe in the bush.
"It is a lesson to always take oue suit more than you do take," said the Infant gravely and he couldn't think why we laughed.

Co.'s Steamship called the stewaril and busied herself with the coffee cups. Old Mr. Fraser went to his cabin and produced some charts to show a Hole- thing. Mrs Fraser marmured that her daughter would catch cold, and went on deck. Presently she returned without her daughter, but with Major Hay and young Fitzgerald. The boy had evidently forgotten his shabby jacket and was radiant. He handed about the coffee caps, sracked jokes, praised the vessel, and made us all jolly. His eye constantly rested on the cabin door, I noticed.
