A CURIOUS MISTAKE. :

Ono strange thing in connection with the Sandpiper's trip was told me by a mis sicuary who has just been over the same rante, r, that almost everywhere she was called The Roman Catholic gunboat for steamer) and was supposed to be French, When informed she was British, the news wus apparently roesired with satisfaction. In this connection one would be almost bold to suggest that such a boat in inland waters should yu secondary flag, with Chineno characters, showing the nationality.

THE TRANSVAAL AND ORANGE

COLONY

Mr. W. Bisloch, whose work "The New South Africa" entitles him to be regarded as an authority on the resources of the two republics recently annexed by Great Britain, has just given his view on Sir David Barbour'a report to a representative of the Gigegew Evening News. After remarking upon the eingular ability and comprehensive nature of that before the Imperial Govoram'nt conlû Sir Davide raport, Mr. Blalock sid: I think arrive at noy adequate idea of the resources of the Transrael, it would be uncestry to have at least two other reporte-one by an eminent mining expert and another by an expert agricultuiet. When those gentlemon had Concluded their reports the financial expert would be in a better position to formulate bis scheme. I think it is a point of considerable importance to note that fir Dad's report is based upon the production of 108, which is really not a proper base fa report of the future rerenue, because the rol innstry was growing so that in three years the yiel of gold would have been donbled in fact that before the war the mining crapanies wėrs giving out erdera for plant and laying plis for future operations which would have meant the doubling of the Band's output within a few years. On the wholo Sir David is rathor conservativo in his estimates. I think, and the revenue of the Transvaal will be much more elastic than he makes allowance for.

I don't agree with him about the Grange River Colory being buable to pay Hisbare of the cost of the war. It is a comparatively rich country, and should be able to pay its fair share.

Dr. Clark, Medical Offeur of Health, appeared on bihaff of the Sanitary Board, and asked His also several ucros outride the city wall. It is expedition to the Tamirs nnder the leadership. It is rather remarkablo that in the report no Worship for an order to declare the houses in the old village of Tai Hang unfit for human inbitation, stating that the Government respired some such order before it could take any step in the matter. If the order were issued and a reasonable time given to defendants to shift, Government would no doubt grant thon land in the new village of Tai Hang wheroon to build their houses.
