From Tchou by the Grand Canal to Tientsin, Chihli, and from thence by rail to Peking.

At the present moment, except a few Russian subjects who have recently invested in land in the locality, there are very few foreign holders-the railway, mining, and steamer com panies and one British partnership, not above half-a-dozen in all, and those all riparian owners. According to the Mercury, Major Bauer, an officer of the Railway Brigade attached to the staff of Count Waldersee, intended to return to Germany through Manchuria and Siberis, but the Russiaur, who apparently did not wish to let him see all their cards, refused him passage. He therefore returned to Chofio and thenes to Vladivostock, Colonel Powell had about the same experience, but disregarded the Russian prohibi tion and went ahead. It is reported from reliable sources that the Russians had a very lively taru with the British Colonel, but it is reported that it is incorrect as stated in several English papers, that he was arrested as a spy. Celonel Ponell has made no backward movement up to the present, and great intervet is felt as to whether or no the Rassions will allow a British officer to do what they refused to allow a German officer to do.
