It is not easy to say what cue would er. pect to find in a coal mino fifteen months after it had been tightly closed to stifle a time. The conditions in such a mine have been lately told by Mr. F. G. Meachama, a British engineer, who, reports that analysis showed the air to consist of 4 por cont. of nitrogen, 12 per cent. of fredamp and 4 per cent. of carbon dioxide, and that those gases were to compressed that about 1,500,000 embic feet recaped from the first bore hole in twenty-four hours. The gases seemed to have exerted a preservative rather than injurious effect. Bread hul becourg somewhat dried, cooked ineon remained fresh, water in tubs had not evaporated, repes and rails had not rusted, clothing had ruined dry, and. timber was unchanged. Decay in the whole time was less than in the three months follow- ing re-opening.
The whale's food capacity is startling. In his new work on whales, Mr. F. E.
