In the land-speaking phonograph of Mr. Horace L. Suort, of Brighton, England, the sound is magnified by a small and delicate piece of mechanism, looking like a whistle, which is con- tained in a trumpet foar foot long. The records are made en d silver cylinder with a sapphire point, instead of in the usual way on wax, and when the cylinder, after receiving the record, in passet again through the machine, the whistle er tongue of the apparatus transforms the sound. of the voice into a deafening roar. In the tests already made, sentences thus repeated have been understood at a distance of ten miles. With a favourable wind, a message was received twelve miles away, and it is believed to be possible to send speech over water to a vessel at ma much as fifteen miles away, all conditions being favourable,

The railway-for-every-carriage ides of M. Izart is reported to be meeting with consider able favour in France. The "inovable rail" is a loose hoop or rim oncircling aach wheel of the carriage, and when this rim runs against an obstacle it forms an inclined plane up which the inner wheel moves easily and without shock, the descent being similarly bridged. On smooth, hard roads, where the road itself is equivalent to a rail, those wheels would be nanecessarily cumbersome. Their armatage becomes evident, however, on rough or muddy roads, or stone pavements, and, it is claimed that the movable rail makes it practicable to carry greatly in- creased loads, while the locks to vehicle "and" noter whether horas or angie-are greatly ossoned.

In an investigation by De Heen; 2 French physicist, a liquids examined worn either quite decidedly opaque to electric wave or transparent to them. Such wares readily pasted through ether, petroleum, benzine, sylane, and butyric and valerianic acids, but were stopped by water, alcokel, aldehyde, carbon kisulphide and ethyl bromide. No connection is shown with other physical propertias.

The importance of effective insulating gloves for electricians is recognized by a Paris society, which will award a prize of 8200 for the best glory submitted before December. The gloves must protest band and forearm, must resist the current and accidental perforation, must be easy to put on, and must allow free movement to the tingers.

At times the pain was so sharp I could not stand upright; it seemed to draw my side rightin, and took away my breath. I took many things to ease this pain without any permanent relief.
