We have a word to say in favor of govern⋅ The ment on the subject of fire insurumees. rates charged here are extremely high, and have not been reduced sinen the town has bees supplied with water. Now we con fidently maintain that since water wis tail.on, the risk of fire in Hongkong is nut one tourth so great as it was before. This may appear a startling position to assume, but let any of our readers who doubt it, refer the question Mr. Jarman the assistant superintendent of Police, and that oficer will give them person al testimony which will surprise them. When fire occurred before water was laid oo. it generally had its own way pretty much. Fire engine there were sure evagb, and plenty of willing hands and stalwart ormis to work them; but the difficulty was to obtain water and all that could be done was to circumscribe the limits of the fire by knocking town houses and making vigorous efforts a given points to arrest the flames. Generally speaking the garison were called out, and the Royal BnHouse of Chus, Max & Sous, J. Molloy & Co., Hill giucers blew upsaol houses us might be fecuted & edger, Cameron & Co., and J. Morton.
