Case of VM girl's detention explained
In response to press enquiries on the detention of a Vietnamese migrant (VM) girl in Victoria Prison, a spokesman for the Security Branch today (Thursday) gave the facts of this case as follows:
"On May 10, the girl in question was apprehended by the Police in Sha Tin and she was transferred to Victoria Prison together with other escapees from the Whitehead Detention Centre. At the time, she was with two other children and a woman who was assumed to be her mother.
"In Victoria Prison, the woman and the girl declined to identify themselves. Efforts were made to establish their identity.
"On May 18, the little girl told a welfare officer in Victoria Prison that the woman was not her mother and her parents were in Whitehead. "Efforts were then made to establish who the child's parents were. They had never reported that she was missing.
"The parents were finally identified and the child was reunited with her parents on May 22."
