SPEECH BY THE GOVERNOR, SIR MURRAY MACLEHOSE AT THE
OPENING CEREMONY OF THE 10TH SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAMME
ON SUNDAY, JUNE 18.
The beginning of another Summer Youth Programme is always a
particularly happy day. This will be the tenth of the series, and a great
success these events have proved.
The expansion in recreation in recent years has been as remarkable
as it has been satisfactory. It is a product of increasing affluence and
more leisure, and more importance given to using leisure constructively.
The Urban Council, the Council for Recreation and Sport, the Recreation
and Sports Service and the Country Parks Authority and many official and
voluntary agencies have all made their special contributions to this
expansion. Let me give just one example of how fast the growth has been,
In 1970 it is estimated that about 500,000 people visited the areas managed
by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. Last year three and a
half million visited the successors of these areas, the Country Parks,
and since 1975 the increase each year has been about 40 per cent. This
