DISTINGUISHED AUTHOR'S PERSONAL VIEW
IN NEW GOVERNMENT, YEARBOOK
The 30th edition of the Government's yearbook, "Hong Kong 1976"
with more than 70 full-page colour pictures
goes on sale tomorrow
(Monday, March 1) with an introductory chapter by the distinguished
author and journalist Richard Hughes. The book is published in English
and Chinese.
It is the first time that a writer from outside the Civil Service
has been invited to contribute the opening chapter, which traditionally
reviews events and developments in Hong Kong.
Mr. Hughes gives his personal view of the past year with the
familiarity of an author on home ground and with the perception of en
international journalist he is Hong Kong correspondent for the Times,
The Sunday Times and The Economist.
He puts recession, expansion and investment into neat perspective;
recalls the Royal visit, the arrival of the Vietnamese rofugses, and a
moment in the history of local cricket; and takes stock of the Mess
Transit Railway, the labour situation, New Towns, and corruption.
The Royal visit is featured in the first of ten picture sections
in the yearbook. Other camera subjects include youth movements, the Oi
Man housing estate, television, fashion, and the Yue Lan Festival.
As the Government's annual report covering the whole of 1975,
the book is a work of reference on virtually every aspect of life in
Hong Kong its 22 chapters ranging from industry, housing and eduction
to recreation, natural history, religion and custom.
